Chapter 3 - The Safe Deposit

The heavy brass key clicked loudly against the marble floor as Evelyn dropped it, refusing to meet her husband's blistering gaze. Julian ignored the metal token rolling toward his polished oxford shoes, his entire focus locked onto the woman he had trusted for half a decade. The illusion of their picture-perfect marriage had dissolved into the dusty foyer air, leaving behind a jagged landscape of deception and cruelty.

"The master safe," Julian repeated, tasting the bitterness of the words. "What have you put in my safe, Evelyn?"

Evelyn let out a dry, chilling laugh that sent a shiver down Clara’s spine. The maid slowly scooped baby Leo into her arms, cradling him against her black-and-white uniform while keeping a cautious distance from the escalating domestic war.

"Everything you built, Julian," Evelyn whispered, stepping past him toward the front doors with an eerie, defiant composure. "Every penny, every deed, every offshore account you thought was safely secured under your corporate umbrella. It’s all gone. Transferred this morning. If you ruin me, you ruin yourself."

Julian lunged forward, grabbing Evelyn by the wrist before she could twist the brass handle of the front door. His fingers tightened around her arm, not with the bruising force she had used on their infant, but with a desperate, crushing strength.

"You forged my signature?" Julian demanded, the veins in his neck bulging. "That’s impossible. The secondary authorization requires my physical biometric scan."

"Technology is wonderful when you have a cooperative chief technology officer on your payroll," Evelyn murmured, smiling coldly as she turned her head to look him dead in the eye. "Say hello to Marcus for me. He sends his regards from the Cayman Islands."

Julian felt the blood drain from his face. Marcus was his most trusted childhood friend and the chief financial officer of Sterling Industries. The betrayal cut deeper than any physical wound, multiplying the horror of the afternoon tenfold. It wasn't just a troubled wife lashing out in a moment of postpartum exhaustion; it was a calculated, multi-million-dollar corporate execution orchestrated right under his nose.

Clara stood up slowly from the checkered floor, holding baby Leo securely. She took a step toward the hallway, sensing the volatile energy shifting from domestic abuse to financial ruin.

"Mr. Sterling, you need to check your laptop in the study," Clara called out hesitantly, her bruised cheek pulsing. "Before Mrs. Sterling left for her spa day yesterday, I saw her downloading documents from your private terminal. She had a flash drive labeled 'Project Titan'."

Evelyn’s composure finally cracked at the edges, a flash of genuine panic flickering across her eyes as she heard Clara mention the file name.

"Shut your mouth, you little gutter rat!" Evelyn screamed, lunging toward the maid with bared teeth, completely dropping her sophisticated mask.

Julian intercepted her instantly, throwing his body between his wife and the maid, shoving Evelyn back against the wall with enough force to rattle the antique paintings hanging in the foyer.

"Don't you ever touch her again," Julian snarled, his voice vibrating with absolute menace. He pulled out his phone again, dialing a rapid succession of digits with trembling fingers. "Security? Lock down the entire estate. Nobody leaves. And send Director Vance to my study immediately."

Evelyn slumped against the wall, a wicked smile slowly spreading across her tear-streaked face as she watched Julian issue the commands.

"It's too late for security, Julian," she whispered softly, pointing a manicured finger toward the driveway. "Watch the front gates."
