Chapter 12 - The Ghost Protocol

The shrill emergency klaxon echoed off the sterile walls of the panic room, drowning out the distant sounds of federal marshals securing the upper floors. Julian tightened his hold on baby Leo, feeling the tiny, rhythmic beat of his son's heart against his chest. He stepped up beside Clara, his eyes fixed on the flashing red characters scrolling relentlessly across the central monitor.

"A secondary network?" Julian demanded, his voice sharp with renewed urgency. "What are you talking about? I own every server rack registered under the Sterling enterprise."

"Not according to this," Clara muttered furiously, her fingers flying across the console keyboard in an attempt to isolate the incoming data stream. "There's a phantom proxy routing through an unlisted satellite uplink in the Cayman Islands. It’s executing something called the Ghost Protocol. It’s wiping every corporate asset, every personal holding, and every traceable cent you own into an untraceable cryptocurrency wallet."

Commander Hayes poked his head back into the panic room doorway, his expression grim. "Agent Vance, we have a problem upstairs. All the communication arrays in the mansion just went dead. The federal marshals' tactical radios are completely jammed."

"It's not a local jam," Clara said without looking up from the screen, her brow furrowed in intense concentration. "It's an automated kill-switch tied to a biological or digital trigger. Someone inside this estate—someone we didn't account for—just executed the final phase."

Julian’s mind raced back through the chaotic events of the afternoon. Marcus was in handcuffs. Director Vance was detained. Evelyn was...

Julian spun around, looking past the marshals out into the dim corridor. "Evelyn. Where is Evelyn?"

Commander Hayes frowned, stepping aside to let them see into the hallway. "The woman in the cream dress? When we breached the study, she wasn't on the floor where you dropped her. The French doors leading to the rear terrace were unlocked. We assumed she fled into the gardens."

"She didn't flee," Julian said, the cold realization hitting him like a physical blow. "She never intended to escape. She was buying time for the transfer protocol to finish uploading from her personal tablet."

Clara slammed her fist onto the console table in frustration. "She bypassed the local network entirely by using a localized quantum transceiver hidden in her jewelry. The diamond necklace she was wearing wasn't just an accessory; it was a mobile encryption relay."

Julian handed baby Leo carefully back to Clara, who instinctively cradled the infant against her uniform.

"Hold him," Julian instructed firmly, his voice devoid of hesitation. "Keep the blast doors locked until Commander Hayes confirms the exterior perimeter is completely secure."

"Mr. Sterling, what are you planning to do?" Clara asked, stepping in front of him. "You can't track a quantum relay on foot without specialized tactical equipment."

"I built this estate, Clara," Julian said, a grim, determined smile touching his lips. "Every brick, every subterranean cable, every emergency bypass. There's a manual override terminal in the old wine cellar beneath the library. If she's uploading the Ghost Protocol, she has to plug the physical drive into the master junction box."

Without waiting for a response, Julian turned and strode out of the panic room into the dim, smoke-filled hallway. The emergency lighting cast long, distorted shadows across the checkered marble floors of the grand foyer as he made his way toward the library wing. The heavy oak doors of the study were still hanging off their hinges, but Julian bypassed them entirely, slipping through a narrow velvet-draped archway that led down into the subterranean levels of the mansion.

The air grew damp and cool as he descended the spiraling stone steps into the cavernous wine cellar. Rows of ancient vintage racks stretched out into the darkness, illuminated only by the faint, rhythmic pulsing of a blue LED light coming from the far corner behind an ornate wrought-iron gate.

Julian crept forward silently, his footsteps muffled by the damp earth and stone floor.
