Chapter 8 - Elena’s Ultimatum

The light from the stairwell was suddenly blocked as a dark silhouette appeared at the top of the concrete steps. Elena stood there, her white blouse slightly crumpled, her dark hair coming loose from its pins, but her hands were no longer trembling. In her right hand, she held a heavy steel fireplace poker, its tip glinting menacingly under the yellow bulb.

"Step away from him, Arthur," Elena called down, her voice devoid of its previous panic, replaced by a cold, metallic authority that Mark had never heard in all their years of marriage.

Arthur didn't flinch; he merely sighed, leaning back in his metal chair and crossing his arms over his heavy wool sweater. "You're too late, Elena. He knows about the program. He knows the architectural firm was a shell."

"Shut up!" Elena hissed, taking three rapid steps down the concrete stairs, the heavy iron poker tapping rhythmically against the edge of each step. She kept her eyes fixed squarely on Mark, her gaze burning with a desperate, frantic intensity. "Mark, put down the folder. Come back upstairs with me right now, and I'll explain everything. Every single detail."

Mark slowly turned his head to look at his wife, the woman he had loved, trusted, and shared a bed with for half a decade. The illusion had completely shattered, leaving behind a stranger wearing a familiar face.

"You were never my wife," Mark said, his voice flat, emotionless, and heavy with a grief so profound it felt like physical paralysis. "The wedding, the house, the life—it was all part of the assignment, wasn't it?"

Elena stopped halfway down the stairs, her lower lip trembling slightly before she hardened her expression once more. "The feelings were real, Mark. From my end, at least, they became real. But the agency discovered we went off-book. They found out we had Lily, and they're coming to sweep us all clean. That velvet box? That was my emergency extraction fund."

"And Lily?" Mark’s voice spiked with sudden, fierce paternal terror. "Is she even my daughter, or was she manufactured for this lie too?"

Elena flinched as if struck, tears finally spilling over her lashes, but she raised her chin defiantly. "Lily is yours biologically. That was the one rule I fought them on. She is our real flesh and blood, Mark, and they are going to take her away from both of us if we don't leave tonight."
