Chapter 12 - The Laptop’s Encryption Key

The muffled thud of the silenced shot echoed hollowly through the spacious kitchen, followed by a sharp gasp from little Lily, who immediately clamped her hands over her ears and curled into a tight ball beside the breakfast island, still clutching her stuffed rabbit. Agent Vance writhed on the hardwood floor, groaning softly as dark crimson blood began to seep between his fingers from the clean graze through his shoulder muscle.

Mark kept the pistol trained steadily on Vance’s chest, his breathing slow and controlled, the adrenaline completely overriding any shock. He glanced back briefly at Elena and Arthur, his eyes cold as winter ice.

"Lock the front door and check the perimeter," Mark ordered, his voice brooking no argument. "If there are more of them outside, we need to know right now."

Elena hesitated for a fraction of a second, looking into Mark’s dead-eyed stare before nodding silently and running toward the front entryway. Arthur knelt beside Vance, efficiently patting down the wounded man's suit jacket until his calloused fingers found a heavy, encrypted flash drive attached to a silver chain around Vance's neck.

"Found it," Arthur muttered, ripping the chain free with a sharp yank. "This is the master key to the Directorate’s central database. Everything—your past files, Elena's recruitment records, and the true reason Lily was targeted—is stored on their off-site cloud server."

Mark walked over, keeping the gun trained on Vance while he reached down and snatched the flash drive from Arthur's palm. He tossed it up once and caught it, his mind working with terrifying clarity. "Vance didn't come here to extract us. He came to erase the local hard drives and silence us permanently before the internal audit could trace his unauthorized operations."

Vance gritted his teeth, glaring up from the floor with a bloody smirk. "You think you can fight the Directorate, Vanguard? They own the politicians, the police, and every satellite in the sky. You're already dead men walking."

May you like

"Maybe so," Mark replied coldly, stepping over Vance's legs as he walked toward the living room wall display. "But I'm taking the truth with me."
