Chapter 7 - The Grandfather’s Confession

The stranger pulled out a metal folding chair from behind the desk and sat down heavily, resting his calloused hands on his knees as he looked up at Mark with tired, sorrowful eyes. The ambient hum of the laptop fan filled the tense air between them while Mark stood rooted to the concrete floor, his heart hammering against his ribs.

"My name is Arthur," the older man said, breaking the silence as he gestured vaguely toward the stacks of manila folders. "And every single thing you think you know about your marriage, your finances, and even your daughter has been carefully scripted by the woman sitting upstairs."

"That's a lie," Mark said, though the words lacked conviction even to his own ears. He remembered Elena's panic, the hidden velvet box, the secret laundry room footage, and the sheer terror in Lily's eyes. "Elena told me her entire family perished in a fire when she was a teenager. She showed me newspaper clippings."

Arthur let out a dry, humorless chuckle that sounded like stones grinding together. "Elena was always exceptionally talented at fabricating evidence. She learned from the best—or the worst, depending on how you look at it. Those clippings were printed on a vintage press I bought her for her eighteenth birthday."

"Why?" Mark demanded, stepping closer to the desk, his fingers gripping the edge of the cold wood. "Why go to all this trouble? What is she hiding from me?"

"From you? Nothing," Arthur replied, his blue eyes locking onto Mark's with an intense, unsettling gravity. "She isn't hiding from you, Mark. She's hiding you from the people who put those passports in that drawer. You aren't who you think you are either."

Mark stepped back as if he had been physically struck, the room seeming to tilt slightly on its axis. "What are you talking about? I'm an architect. I worked at Sterling & Vance for twelve years."

"Sterling & Vance was a front operation run by a government intelligence splinter group," Arthur said quietly, leaning forward in his chair. "Six years ago, your memory was wiped clean, your identity rewritten, and you were placed directly into Elena's custody as part of an experimental witness relocation program. Only, Elena wasn't your protector—she was your handler."

Before Mark could process the horrifying weight of the revelation, the heavy oak door at the top of the stairs creaked open, and the sharp sound of rapid footsteps echoed down the stairwell.
