Chapter 4 - The Hidden Basement Door

Mark’s gaze shifted from Elena’s panicked face back to the paused security monitor, specifically to the heavy steel cellar door visible in the background of the laundry room footage. In the real house, that cellar door had been bolted shut from the inside for five years, ever since they bought the Victorian property, with the previous owner claiming the stone foundation underneath was structurally unsafe. Yet on the black-and-white screen, the deadbolt was clearly thrown back, and a narrow gap of darkness yawned between the wooden panels.

"What is down there, Elena?" Mark asked, pointing a steady finger directly at the monitor's background, his voice dropping into an icy register that made her flinch.

Elena swallowed hard, her throat working convulsively as she looked at the screen, her composure slipping further into sheer terror. "Nothing. It's just damp stone and old pipes. You know the inspector said it was a hazard."

"The inspector never went down there because you told him the key was lost," Mark countered, his memory suddenly serving up past details with brutal clarity. He remembered her insisting they seal the door permanently, claiming mold and radon gas were pooling beneath the floorboards. "You lied about the key, just like you lied about the velvet box."

From the dining room, Lily let out a small, pitiful sniffle, clutching her stuffed rabbit tighter against her chest as she took a tentative step toward the hallway.

"Daddy? Can we turn it off? It’s scary," Lily whispered, her large blue eyes reflecting the blue light of the security panel.

"Stay right there, sweetie, Daddy is figuring it all out," Mark said without turning around, never taking his eyes off his wife’s deteriorating facade. He reached into his pocket and pulled out his heavy keychain, searching for the brass skeleton key that fit the old master locks throughout the house—a key Elena had specifically told him she threw away years ago.

Elena lunged forward, her fingers catching the fabric of his sleeve with desperate strength. "Don't open it, Mark! Please, if you go down those stairs, nothing will ever be the same again. Some doors are meant to stay locked!"

"Everything is already broken, Elena," Mark replied coldly, gently but firmly peeling her fingers away from his shirt one by one.
