Chapter 1 - The Accusation at the Dining Table

The heavy crystal chandelier above the dining table hummed with a low, agonizing vibration, casting harsh shadows across the half-eaten Sunday roast. Five-year-old Lily stood stiffly on her mahogany chair, her white party dress stained with faint gray smudges, tears carving wet tracks through the dust on her flushed cheeks. In her trembling left hand, she clutched a worn, graying stuffed rabbit plush toy by one floppy ear, using her right index finger to point a frantic, accusing tremor straight across the table. Her small chest heaved with ragged breaths as the cruel weight of a secret too big for a child crushed down upon her fragile frame.
"Daddy, she's lying, please believe me!" Lily sobbed, her voice cracking with a raw, desperate terror that sliced through the suffocating silence of the room.
Mark froze, his broad shoulders tensing inside his dark blue button-down shirt as his head snapped sharply toward his daughter, his eyes narrowing into cold, dangerous slits of suspicion.
"What happened? Tell me right now!" Mark demanded, his voice dropping into a harsh, controlled growl that made the water in the crystal glasses ripple.
Elena sat motionless in her high-neck white blouse, her dark hair pulled back into a severe, elegant knot that suddenly looked fragile. Her face drained of all color, turning a chalky, defensive pale as she looked frantically between her angry husband and her terrified child.
"She's making things up, Mark, you know how vivid her imagination is lately," Elena stammered, her voice shaking despite her desperate attempt to sound calm and reasonable.
"She took me into the laundry room!" Lily cried out, tears spilling over her lower lashes as she tightened her grip on the stuffed rabbit until her tiny knuckles turned completely white.
Mark stared hard at Elena, his face hardening with a heavy, suffocating wave of doubt that threatened to drown out years of trust. Without another word, he shoved his chair back with a loud screech against the hardwood floor and turned, walking quickly away from the dining table toward the living room wall.
"The camera? Nobody move, I'm checking it right now," Mark snapped over his shoulder, his long strides eating up the distance to the digital security display mounted beside the hallway archway.

Elena stood up abruptly from her chair, her eyes widening in sheer, unadulterated panic as she watched Mark's hand hover over the glowing screen.
