Chapter 2 - The Glowing Screen in the Hallway

The blue light from the wall-mounted security display painted Mark’s face in eerie, ghostly hues as he tapped the touchscreen to bring up the local server storage. The dining room behind him remained dead silent, save for the muffled, hiccuping gasps of little Lily clutching her stuffed rabbit. On the monitor, the black-and-white lens of the basement laundry room camera flickered to life, showing the harsh fluorescent lighting humming above the folding table. Mark leaned in close, his breath fogging the edge of the glass panel as his eyes locked onto the timestamp in the corner of the grainy video feed. The digital clock read 2:14 PM, exactly twenty minutes before they had all sat down for Sunday dinner.

"Mark, please, don't do this to us," Elena whispered, her footsteps padding softly across the Persian rug as she approached the hallway, her hands wringing the fabric of her white high-neck blouse until her fingers ached.

Mark didn't look back; his tall frame went entirely rigid as the recorded footage began to play at double speed. On the screen, a figure wearing Elena’s exact white blouse and dark trousers stepped into the frame, but her movements were jerky, unnatural, and filled with a cold, calculated urgency that made Mark’s stomach churn.

"Keep your distance, Elena," Mark warned, his voice barely above a whisper, yet it carried a lethal finality that stopped her dead in her tracks three paces away.

On the monitor, the woman on the screen wasn't folding clothes or doing chores; she was standing over the wicker laundry hamper, frantically rummaging through a hidden false bottom. Mark watched in mounting horror as the video showed Elena pulling out a heavy, dark velvet jewelry box that had supposedly been stolen from their master bedroom safe three months ago. The insurance claim had already been paid out, the police report filed, and the case quietly closed. Yet here it was, caught in crisp, unblinking monochrome detail, being handled by his wife with a look of chilling, calculating satisfaction.

"You said burglars took that box," Mark said, his voice terrifyingly quiet as he finally turned his head slowly to look at her, his eyes hollow and burning with betrayal.

Elena’s face crumpled, all pretense of innocence evaporating into the cold hallway air as she looked from Mark's frozen expression to the glowing screen behind him.
