Chapter 11 - The Staged Betrayal

The man in the charcoal-gray suit didn't panic; instead, he slowly raised his hands to shoulder height and turned his head just enough to reveal a sharp, knowing smirk playing across his clean-shaven face. He looked at Mark not with fear, but with the weary patience of a manager dealing with an insubordinate employee.

"Put the gun down, Vanguard. You’re entirely out of your depth here," the man said smoothly, his voice dripping with condescension. "Elena didn't tell you the best part, did she? She was the one who activated the beacon tonight. She called us in."

Mark’s gaze snapped back toward Elena, who had just stepped out of the stairwell behind him. Her face drained of all color, her lips parting in a silent gasp of denial as she shook her head frantically.

"Mark, don't listen to him! He's lying to turn us against each other!" Elena cried out, taking a desperate step forward, her hands raised in a plea for trust.

"Agent Vance is telling the truth, Mark," Arthur added heavily as he emerged from the basement behind them, his expression grim and resigned. "She made a deal with the Directorate three days ago: our lives in exchange for your permanent reintegration."

Mark stood frozen in the center of the hallway, the gun heavy in his hand, feeling the walls of his entire existence cave in from every direction. On one side stood the man threatening his child; on the other stood the grandfather and the wife, both of whom had lied to him from the very first day they met. But beneath the betrayal, a cold, dormant instinct took over his analytical mind—something didn't add up about Agent Vance’s smug posture.

"If she called you in for extraction, why are you alone?" Mark asked quietly, his eyes narrowing as he noticed the man's right hand twitching subtly toward his left lapel.

Agent Vance’s smirk faltered for a fraction of a second—a micro-expression that Mark’s trained eye caught instantly. Before Vance could lunge for the hidden holster beneath his jacket, Mark pulled the trigger; the silenced pistol emitted a dull, heavy thud, and Vance dropped instantly to the hardwood floor with a sharp cry of pain, clutching his right shoulder.
