Chapter 8 - The Global Upload

The screen of Mark’s phone flared with a blinding white light as the progress bar snapped to one hundred percent.
UPLOAD COMPLETE: 4.2 GIGABYTES TRANSFERRED TO SECURE OFF-SITE REPOSITORY.
For one agonizing second, nothing happened. The basement server hummed, the orange LED flickered steadily, and Julian Vance stood frozen on the concrete floor, his polite, unbothered facade shattering entirely. The calm, calculated executive mask dropped away, revealing a look of pure, unadulterated panic in Julian’s eyes.
"You absolute fool," Julian hissed, lunging forward with a speed that defied his polished appearance.
Mark didn't flinch. He sidestepped the lunge, grabbing a heavy plastic storage bin off a nearby shelf and hurling it directly into Julian’s path. The bin crashed into the executive’s shins, sending Julian stumbling hard against the concrete wall with a sharp grunt of pain.
"Mark, stop!" Clara screamed, throwing herself in front of Julian to shield him as Mark stepped toward the server rack to yank the USB cable free. "You just committed corporate treason! Do you have any idea what you’ve unleashed?"
"I unleashed an insurance policy," Mark panted, clutching his phone tightly in his trembling hand. The screen was now flashing a series of automated distribution receipts, showing copies of the encrypted biometric logs dispersing across multiple independent journalistic and regulatory nodes worldwide. "If anything happens to Chloe—if you or your company try to trigger that neural reset—the entire architecture of Project Aegis-Child goes public within five minutes. Every medical board, every federal ethics committee, every news outlet on the continent will have the complete unredacted files."
Julian pushed himself up off the wall, brushing dust off his expensive charcoal suit with a trembling hand. His composure was returning, but it was colder now, stripped of all corporate pleasantries. The polite facade was entirely gone.
"You think an open-source data leak protects you, Mr. Miller?" Julian asked, his voice low, steady, and venomous. "You've just painted a very large, very expensive target on your family's back. The people who fund Project Aegis-Child are not a traditional medical firm. They are defense contractors with deep ties to federal intelligence agencies. Data leaks don't destroy them; they trigger asset containment protocols."
Mark froze, the phone slipping slightly in his sweaty palm. "Asset containment?"
"They don't care about public scandals, Mark," Clara whispered, her voice hollow as she stared at Julian with sudden, absolute horror. She slowly backed away from her boss, the realization of what she had whored her family out to finally crashing down around her. "Julian... what kind of containment?"

Before Julian could answer, a loud, concussive thud echoed from upstairs, shaking the entire foundation of the house, followed immediately by the harsh, wailing shriek of the residential security alarm.
