Chapter 5 - The Visitor at the Door

The man on the screen didn't blink. Julian Vance stood outside the front door with his hands neatly folded behind his back, mirroring the exact posture Clara had held just minutes earlier in the kitchen. The resemblance in their defensive, guarded body language sent an electric shock of revulsion through Mark’s nervous system.
"Mark," Clara whispered frantically, grabbing his forearm with desperate strength. "Don't open the door. If you open that door, we lose all leverage. Julian plays dirty. He has legal teams on retainer that can strip custody of Chloe before we even finish blinking."
"Custody?" Mark threw her hand off his arm, his eyes blazing. "On what grounds? For protecting my daughter from a corporate data-harvesting scheme that you invited into our home behind my back?"
"On the grounds that you’re an unverified liability," Clara said harshly, her voice hardening once more as the survival instinct took over. "Your freelance web business went under six months ago. Your credit score is in the gutter. On paper, Mark, I’m the primary earner, and the corporate sponsor holds the medical guardianship rider for Chloe’s specialized therapy. If it comes down to a legal battle, the courts will side with the institution that funds her life-saving treatments."
Mark stared at her, horrified by how coldly calculated her assessment was. She had already gamed out the legal chess match while he was still trying to comprehend the rules of the board.
The doorbell chimed again—longer this time, a sustained, demanding tone that vibrated through the floorboards.
"Mr. Miller? Mrs. Miller?" Julian’s voice echoed softly through the intercom speaker mounted beside the front door, carrying clearly into the quiet kitchen. "I know it’s late, and I apologize for the unannounced visit. But the telemetry server flagged an unauthorized local extraction from unit seven. We need to secure the hardware before the nightly backup sync."
Mark looked down at the blue device still gripped tightly in his sweat-slicked palm. The screen was currently displaying a flashing countdown timer: 00:45 seconds until system wipe.
"He’s going to wipe the local memory," Mark said, his jaw tightening into a hard line. "He wants to delete every single log that proves what they’ve been uploading from our daughter's neural sessions."
"Let him," Clara pleaded, stepping closer. "If you let him wipe the unit, we walk away clean. Chloe stays with us, her therapy continues, and we pretend none of this ever happened. We go back to normal."
"Normal?" Mark let out a harsh, humorless laugh. "There is no normal anymore, Clara. You turned our child into a lab rat."
May you like
Mark made a sudden, decisive pivot, sprinting past the kitchen island toward the back utility hallway. He threw open the door to the basement stairs just as the countdown timer on the blue device hit ten seconds, and the front door downstairs gave a heavy, metallic click as Julian overrode the deadbolt from the porch.
