Chapter 12 - The Coordinates of No Return

The amber light on the blue handheld device pulsed steadily, casting an eerie, synthetic glow across the bruised knuckles of Mark’s hand. He stared down at the screen, his chest rising and falling in shallow, rapid motions.

"Don't listen to him, Mark," Clara pleaded, stepping closer with her hands outstretched, though she dared not touch him. "It’s a trap. If Julian is offering coordinates, it means the transport vehicle isn't moving toward the Cascade facility at all. He’s redirecting us."

"And why would he do that?" Mark snapped, his voice sharp and venomous as he spun around to face her. "To lure us out into the open so your corporate handlers can clean up the loose ends permanently? Because honestly, Clara, at this point, dying in a ditch sounds like a mercy compared to staying in this house with you."

"Because the board is overriding him," Clara said desperately, grabbing the edge of the island as she leaned toward Mark. "Julian is the regional director, but he answers to an oversight committee. If you leaked the raw Aegis-Child dataset to an off-site server, the committee isn't just worried about public scandal—they’re worried about a federal containment breach. Julian is trying to clean up his own mess before the board fires him."

Mark scoffed, shaking his head in bitter disbelief. "And you expect me to trust your read on corporate politics? You’ve been lying to me since the day we met! For all I know, you’re still coordinating with him right now to hand me over to the extraction team!"

"Look at my hands, Mark!" Clara cried out, holding her palms up to show him her violently trembling fingers. "I gave up my career, my clearance, and my entire life the second those tactical operatives walked through that window and took my baby! I have nothing left! If I wanted to betray you, I would have walked out with Julian ten minutes ago."

Mark hesitated, his eyes locking onto hers. Despite the overwhelming mountain of deception, the raw, agonizing terror in her face looked entirely genuine. She was just as trapped in the machinery as he was, only she had helped build the gears that were currently crushing them both.

He turned his back on her and bolted down the basement stairs, taking them two at a time. The basement was dark, illuminated only by the frantic blinking of the orange LED on the server rack. Mark threw himself in front of the console, tapping the spacebar on the connected keyboard to wake the monitor from its sleep state.

A single flashing text file blinked in the center of the dark screen: EMERGENCY REDIRECTION ROUTE.

Beneath the file name were a set of global GPS coordinates and a timestamp: 02:15 AM - INTERCEPT POINT: ROUTE 9 REST AREA, MILE MARKER 42.

Mark grabbed his phone, punched the coordinates into the mapping application, and watched as the GPS plotted a route through the dark, winding mountain passes fifty miles north of the city. The estimated travel time: forty-five minutes.

A heavy hand landed softly on Mark’s shoulder from behind. He flinched, spinning around with a raised fist, only to find Clara standing at the bottom of the stairs, her eyes dark, resolute, and completely devoid of fear.

"I’m coming with you," Clara said quietly. "If we're going to get our daughter back, we do it together. And if we don't... we burn the whole system down with us."
