Chapter 4 - The Digital Lease

The screen glowed coldly against Mark’s knuckles as he read the crisp black text scrolling across the white background.
SUBJECT: MARK MILLER. NOTICE OF BREACH. LOCAL RECOVERY PROTOCOL INITIATED.
"Recovery protocol?" Mark scoffed, though a cold sweat broke out along his hairline. He looked up from the screen to meet Clara’s terrified gaze. "What are they recovering, Clara? What did you put inside our daughter?"
"Nothing!" Clara cried out, her composure finally shattering as a single tear slipped down her cheek. She rushed forward, grabbing the sleeves of Mark’s blue shirt. "It’s not a physical implant, Mark! It’s not what you’re thinking! It’s a neural mapping algorithm. They funded her experimental therapy, but the clinic... they used a proprietary learning model. They needed a live cognitive subject to train their neural net."
Mark’s breath hitched. He stared down at Chloe, who was still curled up in the corner, chewing absentmindedly on the hem of her pink long-sleeve shirt, oblivious to the terrifying gravity of the conversation happening above her.
"You let them use our daughter's brain as a training dataset for an artificial intelligence?" Mark’s voice was barely a rasp, the betrayal cutting deeper than any physical blow ever could. "You sold her mind to a tech conglomerate for mortgage payments and therapy bills?"
"We couldn't afford the specialist treatments otherwise!" Clara sobbed, her knees buckling slightly as Mark pulled away from her grip. "The insurance denied every single claim. Julian offered a complete care package in exchange for passive telemetry during her developmental windows. It was supposed to be completely anonymous! The data was scrubbed of all identifiers!"
"Then why is her serial number flashing on a local tracking device in our kitchen?" Mark shouted, pointing a shaking finger at the blue unit. "Why did Julian just lock the system down the second I touched it?"
Before Clara could formulate a defense, the front doorbell chimed. It wasn't the polite, single ring of a neighbor dropping off mail; it was a sharp, aggressive, double-toned chime that signaled a hardwired security override from the exterior porch panel.
Both adults froze instantly. Chloe stopped chewing on her shirt, her wide, blue eyes darting toward the dark hallway that led to the front entrance.
"They're already here," Clara whispered, her voice dropping into a tone of absolute, paralyzing terror.

Mark slowly lowered the blue device, his thumb accidentally pressing a hidden physical button on the side panel. The screen blinked, clearing the notice of breach and replacing it with a live, high-definition video feed from the front porch camera, showing a tall, immaculately dressed man in a charcoal suit standing calmly under the porch light, staring directly into the lens with a thin, polite smile.
