Chapter 14 - The Intercept at Mile 42

The rest area was entirely deserted, save for a single, heavy-duty black transport van parked haphazardly across two empty parking stalls near the edge of the tree line. Its engine was idling, the low, deep rumble of its diesel exhaust vibrating faintly through the damp night air. Exhaust fumes plumed lazily from the tailpipe, dissolving into the thick mountain fog that clung to the asphalt like a shroud.
Mark eased his sedan off the main highway, cutting the headlights entirely as he rolled silently into the gravel lot, parking fifty yards away behind the rusted hull of an abandoned snowplow.
"That’s the transport," Clara whispered, leaning forward as she pressed her hands against the dashboard, her eyes fixed on the rear doors of the black van. "That’s the exact vehicle model used by the Level-4 security division for off-grid asset transfers."
"Stay in the car," Mark said, his voice hard as stone as he reached down to pop the driver’s side door open.
"Mark, no—if you go out there alone, they’ll neutralize you without a second thought," Clara protested, grabbing the sleeve of his blue button-up shirt. "We need a tactical approach. If Julian sent us here, there has to be a communications relay nearby."
"I don't care about a communication relay, Clara," Mark growled, pulling his arm away from her grip with a sharp, violent jerk. "My daughter is inside that van. I’m done playing corporate chess."
Mark shoved his door open, stepping out into the freezing mountain air. The wind whipped his hair across his forehead, carrying the sharp scent of pine and diesel fuel. He kept low, using the shadows of the snowplow and a row of rusted trash bins to creep stealthily across the gravel lot toward the rear of the heavy transport vehicle.
As he closed the distance, the back doors of the van clicked softly. A single tactical operative clad in matte-black gear stepped down onto the asphalt, holding a heavy metal equipment case in one hand. The operative looked around the empty rest area once, scanning the tree line with practiced military efficiency, before reaching back inside the vehicle.
A high-pitched, familiar toddler’s whimper drifted out from the interior of the van.
