Chapter 10 - The Vanishing Act

"No! No, you don't!" Mark screamed, pushing himself up off the floor despite the agonizing fire in his shoulder. He lunged across the kitchen toward the window, but before he could reach the sill, the second tactical operative swept his legs out from under him, sending Mark crashing hard to the floor once more.
The heavy boot of the operative came down firmly on Mark’s chest, pinning him to the shattered glass and linoleum. Mark thrashed wildly, his fingers clawing uselessly at the tactical pant leg, tears of rage and helplessness blurring his vision.
"Chloe! CLORA!" Mark’s voice cracked into a jagged, bloody scream as he watched the small pink shape of his daughter vanish entirely into the dark, rainy shadows of the backyard.
Clara stood frozen near the basement door, her hands clutched tightly over her mouth, her body trembling so violently she looked as though she might shatter into pieces. She didn't run after them. She didn't scream. She simply stared out the broken window into the empty night, the crushing weight of her lifelong betrayal finally breaking her completely.
Julian turned slowly away from the window, adjusting his cuffs once more with absolute calm. He looked down at Mark, who was still pinned beneath the operative’s boot, his chest heaving with ragged breaths.
"Save your energy, Mr. Miller," Julian said smoothly, his tone conversational, almost polite. "The extraction team is operating under a Level-4 federal charter. By sunrise, your daughter will be securely relocated to an off-grid neurological research facility in the Cascade Mountains. Any attempt to track her through local authorities will hit a wall of classified federal injunctions."
"You... you monsters," Mark choked out, blood pooling slightly at the corner of his mouth from a split lip. "She’s a baby. She’s just a little girl."
"She is the key to the next fifty years of human cognitive evolution," Julian corrected, his expression chillingly serene. "And you, Mr. Miller, are a security threat who elected to play a high-stakes game without understanding the rules."
Julian raised two fingers in a sharp gesture to the tactical operatives. The man pinning Mark to the floor immediately stepped back, lifting his boot and allowing Mark to collapse heavily against the floorboards. The two operatives moved backward toward the shattered window with practiced, silent grace, vaulting out into the darkness and vanishing as quickly as they had arrived.
The kitchen fell into a heavy, suffocating silence, broken only by the distant, rhythmic dripping of the kitchen faucet and the persistent wail of the house alarm, which Julian casually reached out and disabled with a four-digit code entered into the wall panel.
Mark pushed himself up onto his hands and knees, ignoring the searing pain in his shoulder. He glared up at Clara, who remained frozen by the basement steps like a ghost.
"Are you happy now?" Mark whispered, his voice trembling with a dark, terrifying rage. "Your career. Your grants. Your corporate sponsors. They just took our little girl."
Clara slowly lowered her hands from her face. Her eyes were hollow, her expression utterly devoid of hope. She looked down at her feet, then slowly turned her gaze toward the granite kitchen island, where the blue handheld device lay dark and silent.
"We aren't going to the police, Mark," Clara said, her voice dropping into a flat, dead monotone that sounded nothing like her.
Mark stopped moving. He stared up at her, his heart hammering against his ribs. "What are you talking about? We are going to tear this state apart until we find her."
May you like
"We can't," Clara said, finally raising her head to meet his blazing eyes with a terrifying, calm resolve. "Because Julian didn't just take Chloe to a research facility. He left a final sync packet on the local server before they breached the perimeter. And it contains something we weren't meant to see about where Chloe was actually born."
