Chapter 3 - The Automated Guest

The chime hung in the air like a heavy, uninvited guest. Mark and Clara froze, their eyes locked on the blue handheld device resting on the granite countertop. The screen, which had moments ago displayed a grim red warning, now glowed a pristine, sterile white. A small loading bar crept steadily across the glass, accompanied by the faint, rhythmic clicking of an internal hard drive spinning up to maximum speed.

"What is that?" Mark demanded, his voice tight as he took a cautious step toward the counter. "Did you set an alarm? Is this part of whatever automated system you signed us up for?"

"I didn't program any alarms," Clara said, her voice betraying a sudden, genuine tremor as she tracked the progress bar with wide, panicked eyes. "The sync schedule isn't supposed to run until midnight. Someone else is pushing an update from the outside."

"From the outside?" Mark grabbed the device before the bar could hit one hundred percent. He squinted at the interface, his tech-support instincts kicking in as he tried to locate the IP address of the incoming transmission. "There’s no local Wi-Fi bridge active. They’re hitting the secure cellular band. Clara, who has the master encryption key for this unit?"

"Only the regional director," Clara whispered, her hands flying to cover her mouth as the color completely drained from her cheeks. "Only Julian."

Mark’s heart skipped a beat. Julian Vance was not just Clara’s supervisor at the behavioral analytics firm; he was the primary venture capitalist who had funded their mortgage when Mark’s freelance web-design business had hit rock bottom two years ago. At the time, it had felt like a miracle. Now, standing in the sterile light of their suburban kitchen, it felt like the closing of a trap.

"Julian has backdoor access to our home diagnostic network?" Mark asked, his voice shaking with restrained fury. "He’s been monitoring Chloe’s developmental data directly from his office? Or worse, from his phone?"

"It was just routine telemetry," Clara insisted, though her defense lacked any real conviction now. She took a step forward, reaching out a trembling hand. "Mark, give me the device. If Julian is pushing a manual override, it means he knows we’ve accessed the restricted partition. If he locks the local hardware, we won't be able to retrieve the baseline logs."

"Baseline logs for what?" Mark pulled the device away, holding it safely out of her reach. "What are you hiding in those files, Clara? Tell me right now, or I swear to God I’m walking out that front door with Chloe and calling the authorities."

The loading bar hit one hundred percent with a soft ding, and a new text prompt materialized on the screen, addressed directly to Mark’s legal name.
