Chapter 7 - The Shredded Truth

The sound of tearing paper echoed sharply through the cavernous, amber-lit studio.

Arthur Sterling stopped dead in his tracks, his smooth, composed demeanor instantly evaporating. His eyes flashed with cold, unbridled fury as white confetti fluttered down onto the marley floor like winter snow.

"You stupid, arrogant little girl," Sterling snarled, dropping the polished facade entirely. "You have no idea what you just destroyed."

"I know enough," Zoe yelled back, adrenaline surging through her veins as she shoved the shredded pieces deeper into her hoodie pocket. "You thought you could use us as pawns in your corporate hostile takeover, but the physical copies aren't the only ones that exist!"

Sterling’s expression tightened. "What are you talking about?"

"Cloud storage, Mr. Sterling," Zoe bluffed, her heart hammering wildly against her ribs, praying that her bluff would hold. "The moment you handed me that envelope, my phone automatically scanned the encrypted QR code on the back flap and uploaded every single file to an off-site server. If anything happens to me, Maya, or my mother, those files go public to the federal district attorney within sixty seconds."

For three agonizing seconds, Sterling just stared at her, his calculating mind working at breakneck speed to determine if she was bluffing. The security guards shifted uncomfortably behind him, waiting for a command.

Then, Sterling let out a short, cold laugh. He shook his head slowly.

"You think you're very clever, don't you, Zoe?" Sterling murmured, stepping closer despite the physical distance. "You think a high school dancer can outmaneuver a man who has bought and sold three ballet companies before breakfast? Keep your little cloud files. They won't save your mother’s job tomorrow when the corporate audit hits her department."

Zoe flinched. The threat to her mother was real, immediate, and terrifying.

Before Zoe could formulate a response, the office door behind them flew open with a loud bang. Coach Vance stood there, clutching a heavy, vintage leather briefcase to her chest. Her face was deathly pale, and her eyes were wild.

"Arthur, stop!" Coach Vance screamed, raising the briefcase. "Leave the girls alone! Here is the original financial ledger you’ve been looking for. Take it and get out of my academy!"

Sterling’s eyes locked onto the briefcase in Coach Vance’s hands, a triumphant smile slowly spreading across his face. "Ah, Clara. I knew you were smart underneath all that stubborn loyalty."

Sterling stepped past Zoe and Maya, reaching out his hand to take the briefcase from Coach Vance.

As Sterling’s fingers brushed the leather handle, the studio lights suddenly flickered back to life with a blinding flash, and the heavy security doors at the far end of the hallway slammed wide open. A booming voice echoed through the corridors:
