Chapter 12 - The Betrayal

The amber glow of the old laptop screen illuminated the dark costume room, casting long, shivering shadows across the racks of glittering tutus. Zoe sat frozen in front of the workbench, her fingers hovering motionless over the keyboard, unable to process the face staring back at her from the video file.
It was Marcus, Zoe’s older brother, who worked part-time as the head lighting technician for the Apex Elite Academy.
On the screen, Marcus leaned forward, accepting a thick brown envelope stuffed with cash directly from Arthur Sterling’s hands.
"The digital firewall is bypassed," Marcus’s recorded voice echoed clearly from the laptop’s tinny speakers. "You'll have full administrative access to alter any student roster or financial ledger by midnight. Just make sure my sister’s scholarship account stays untouched so she doesn't suspect a thing."
"My brother," Zoe whispered, her voice cracking as a suffocating wave of shock and heartbreak washed over her. "Marcus did this. He’s the one who gave Sterling the master admin password."
Maya stared at the screen in absolute disbelief, her hand flying up to cover her mouth. "Your brother? Marcus? But... he always supported your dancing. He helped pay for your first pair of custom pointe shoes!"
"He lied to me," Zoe said, her voice dropping into a hollow, dangerous whisper. Hot tears finally spilled over her lower lashes, not from sadness, but from a deep, burning betrayal. "He used my scholarship as a cover to launder dirty money for Sterling right under my nose."
Before Maya could offer a word of comfort, the heavy front doors of the academy echoed with a loud, metallic clatter from the distant studio floor.
Footsteps. Slow, heavy, and deliberate.
Zoe and Maya froze. The federal agents had left hours ago, and Coach Vance and Chloe were in police custody. Nobody else had a key to the facility.
"Zoe?" Maya whispered, her eyes wide with mounting terror as she grabbed Zoe’s sleeve. "Who’s out there?"
Zoe didn't answer. She quickly ejected the micro-SD card from the laptop, shoved it deep into her hoodie pocket, and quietly slid off the wooden stool. She motioned for Maya to stay low behind the heavy velvet racks of Nutcracker costumes.
The footsteps grew closer, stopping just outside the threshold of the costume storage room.
A tall silhouette filled the doorway, leaning casually against the doorframe. The figure stepped into the dim amber light of the room.
It wasn't a federal agent. It was Marcus.
He looked exhausted, his hair disheveled, his jacket half-zipped, but his eyes were sharp, cold, and entirely unfamiliar.
"I saw the lights on from the parking lot, kiddo," Marcus said, his voice terrifyingly calm as he scanned the cluttered room. "What are you and your little friend still doing locked up in here after hours?"
Zoe slowly stepped out from behind the costume rack, her hands trembling as she faced her older brother for the first time since the truth had been exposed.
"We were just reviewing some old files, Marcus," Zoe replied, her voice dangerously steady. "Isn't that right? Or should I say, Sterling’s head financial tech?"

Marcus stopped dead in his tracks. The casual smirk vanished from his face, replaced by a dark, calculating glare.
