Chapter 13 - The Confrontation

The air in the cramped costume storage room grew instantly thick, suffocatingly tense. Marcus let out a slow, heavy breath, his shoulders dropping as the easygoing big-brother facade melted away entirely.

"You found the drive," Marcus stated, his tone flat, devoid of any remorse or surprise. It wasn't a question.

"I found the video, Marcus," Zoe shot back, stepping forward until she was just a few feet away from him. Her voice shook with the weight of years of misplaced trust. "You traded my future, my scholarship, and Maya’s entire career just to line your pockets with dirty cash from Sterling?"

"You don't understand how the real world works, Zoe!" Marcus snapped, his voice suddenly sharp, echoing off the racks of glittering costumes. "Mom’s medical bills weren't going to pay themselves! The bank was about to foreclose on our house, and the scholarship fund was dry! Sterling offered a way out, and I took it."

"By destroying everything I worked for?" Zoe shouted, tears spilling down her cheeks as the betrayal cut deeper than any physical blow. "You didn't save our family, Marcus. You turned us into criminals!"

Maya watched from the shadows of the racks, her heart aching for Zoe as she witnessed the shattering of a family bond right before her eyes.

Marcus took a step forward, his expression hardening into something cold and desperate. He reached slowly into the inside pocket of his jacket.

"I’m sorry it had to be you who found out, Zoe," Marcus murmured, his hand tightening around something hidden inside his coat. "Sterling is gone, but the network is still active. If those files leave this room, my life—our lives—are completely ruined."

Zoe didn't flinch. She instinctively pressed her hand against her hoodie pocket, feeling the tiny micro-SD card resting safely against her chest. "Then you should have thought about that before you sold your soul to a criminal, Marcus."

Before Marcus could pull whatever was hidden in his jacket, Maya suddenly lunged forward from behind the rack, grabbing a heavy wooden broomstick leaning against the workbench and swinging it with all her might directly at Marcus’s arm.

The wooden handle struck Marcus’s forearm with a sharp crack, knocking whatever he was holding flying across the room into a pile of tulle skirts.

"Run, Zoe!" Maya screamed, grabbing Zoe’s hand.

Without looking back, Zoe and Maya bolted past Marcus toward the exit of the costume room, sprinting out onto the open marley floor of the main dance studio.

They reached the heavy front doors, frantically shoving the push-bar down. The doors didn't budge. They were chained and padlocked from the outside.

Zoe spun around just as Marcus came stumbling out of the costume room hallway, clutching his bruised arm, a dark, desperate look in his eyes.

"You're not going anywhere," Marcus panted, stepping out to block their only path to the exit.
