Chapter 5 - The Secret Donor

Zoe froze, her fingers brushing the crisp paper of the envelope resting on the wooden barre. The air in the studio grew instantly dense, suffocatingly tense.

"Mr. Sterling?" Zoe echoed, narrowing her eyes. "Who is Mr. Sterling?"

Coach Vance strode forward, her heels clicking aggressively against the marley floor. She stopped just inches from Zoe, her face twisted in a mixture of anger and genuine panic.

"Don't play games with me, Zoe," Coach Vance hissed, her voice trembling slightly. "Arthur Sterling is the primary financial backer of this entire academy. He owns half the commercial real estate in this city, and he holds the mortgage on this building. If you were speaking with him, I need to know what he said."

Zoe held her ground, lifting her chin. "He didn't say much. Just that I should be careful who I trust, and that corruption runs deep around here."

Coach Vance’s face drained of what little color it had left. She glanced at the white envelope on the barre, her eyes widening in realization. "He gave you something. Give it to me. Now."

"Why?" Zoe challenged, sliding her hand casually over the envelope to conceal it behind her gym bag. "Is there something in here that proves you didn't run those digital scores at midnight?"

"You don't understand the forces at play here, Zoe!" Coach Vance snapped, her composure completely shattering. She grabbed Zoe by the forearm, her grip surprisingly tight for a ballet instructor. "Arthur Sterling doesn't care about Maya’s solo. He doesn't care about your scholarship. This academy is drowning in debt, and Sterling is using these competitions as leverage to force a buyout. If you use whatever is in that envelope, you’re not just blowing up the ballet company—you’re destroying livelihoods."

Maya crept out from the dressing room, clutching her dance bag tightly to her chest, her big eyes darting between Coach Vance and Zoe.

"Let her go, Coach," Maya whispered bravely, stepping into the light. "If Mr. Sterling has proof that Chloe cheated, the truth needs to come out."

Coach Vance slowly released Zoe’s arm, stepping back with a defeated sigh. She looked at Maya, then at Zoe, her expression shifting from panic to profound sadness.

"The truth won't save you, Maya," Coach Vance murmured quietly. "Sterling doesn't want justice. He wants control. And the person he’s setting up to take the fall isn't Chloe... it’s you, Zoe."

Before either girl could process the warning, the studio lights flickered violently twice and then went pitch black.
