Chapter 10 - The Second Warrant

The amber emergency lights hummed softly overhead, casting long, dramatic shadows across the polished marley floor.
Coach Vance froze, her hands tightening reflexively around the straps of her leather handbag. The federal agent holding the tablet stepped forward, his boots clicking with an ominous finality.
"Clara Vance," the lead agent announced, pulling a folded legal document from his tactical vest. "You are being placed under federal arrest for aiding and abetting corporate embezzlement, falsifying academy accreditation records, and obstruction of justice."
"No!" Maya gasped, stepping forward instinctively. "Coach Vance didn't do anything! She was trying to protect us!"
"Step back, young lady," the agent warned, gesturing Maya away as two officers moved in on either side of Coach Vance.
Coach Vance didn't fight back. She didn't scream, and she didn't cry. She simply let her handbag slip from her fingers, watching it hit the floor with a dull thud. Her shoulders slumped forward as she extended her wrists toward the steel cuffs.
"I protected this studio for twenty years," Coach Vance whispered, her voice cracking with profound sorrow as the cold metal clicked into place. "I thought if I played along with Sterling, he would leave the students alone. I was wrong."
Chloe watched the arrest with a smug, vindictive smile playing across her lips. "Play stupid games, win stupid prizes, Coach. Maybe next time you won't back the losing horse."
"Shut up, Chloe," Zoe snapped, stepping protectively in front of Maya. She turned her attention back to the federal agents. "If Coach Vance is being arrested, what happens to the academy? What happens to the regional showcase in three days?"
The lead agent paused, tucking the tablet under his arm. "The board of directors is dissolved, and the facility is being seized as federal property pending asset forfeiture. All classes, rehearsals, and competitions associated with Apex Elite are canceled indefinitely."
The words hit Zoe like a physical blow. Canceled? Months of blisters, bleeding toes, endless hours of sweat and sacrifice—all wiped out in a single night of corporate corruption.
Maya sank slowly to the floor, pulling her knees up to her chest and burying her face in her arms, her quiet sobs echoing through the empty, cavernous studio.
Zoe knelt beside her, wrapping a comforting arm around Maya's shaking shoulders, glaring up at the remaining officers with fierce defiance.
"You can't do this," Zoe said, her voice trembling with restrained fury. "You’re punishing the dancers. We didn't do anything wrong!"
"Take it up with the federal judge in the morning," the agent replied coldly, gesturing for the rest of the team to escort Coach Vance and Chloe toward the exit.
As the heavy metal doors swung shut behind the last of the officers, absolute, suffocating silence descended upon the studio.
Zoe and Maya sat alone on the floor under the flickering amber lights. The massive mirrors stretched out before them, reflecting their broken, exhausted figures.

Slowly, Zoe reached into her hoodie pocket and pulled out the shattered pieces of the white envelope Mr. Sterling had given her earlier. As she unfolded one of the larger fragments, a small, folded micro-SD card slipped out from the inner lining and clattered softly against the marley floor.
