Chapter 14 - The Final Stand

The amber emergency lights cast long, distorted shadows across the massive mirrors of the studio. Marcus blocked the exit, his breathing heavy, his face twisted in a desperate mix of anger and regret.

"Just give me the card, Zoe," Marcus pleaded, his voice cracking slightly as he took another slow step forward. "I'm still your brother. I won't let anything happen to you, but I can't let you hand that drive to the feds."

"You stopped being my brother the second you sold out this academy and framed Coach Vance," Zoe said fiercely, stepping in front of Maya to shield her from any sudden movement.

"Zoe, the side window!" Maya whispered urgently, her eyes darting toward the frosted glass fire exit on the far side of the studio.

Zoe didn't hesitate. With an explosive burst of speed, she grabbed Maya’s hand and they bolted sideways across the marley floor, completely bypassing Marcus.

"Hey! Stop!" Marcus yelled, lunging after them with surprising agility for someone with a bruised arm.

Zoe slammed her shoulder hard against the push-bar of the side emergency exit. With a loud snap of breaking plastic, the heavy metal door flew open, flooding the dark studio with cool, fresh night air and the steady sound of falling rain.

They tumbled out into the alleyway behind the academy, the rain instantly soaking their hair and clothes. But they didn't stop. They sprinted down the slick concrete alley toward the brightly lit main street where passing cars splashed through puddles in the night.

As they reached the sidewalk, the wail of approaching sirens suddenly echoed down the avenue. A pair of police cruisers pulled up sharply to the curb, their red and blue lights flashing violently against the brick walls of the building.

The doors flew open, and federal agents—the same ones who had arrested Sterling earlier—stepped out into the rain.

Marcus stepped out of the alleyway a moment later, stopping dead in his tracks as the federal agents immediately turned their tactical lights and weapons toward him.

"Marcus Vance! Put your hands on your head, right now!" the lead agent commanded.

Marcus looked at the officers, then looked past them to where Zoe stood shivering in the rain, clutching the micro-SD card tightly in her hand. Slowly, defeatedly, Marcus raised his hands and dropped to his knees on the wet pavement.

As federal agents swarmed forward to cuff him, Zoe let out a long, shuddering breath, sliding down the brick wall until she sat flat on the wet sidewalk, entirely drained of strength.

Maya sank down right beside her, pulling her close in the pouring rain. They didn't say a word. They just held onto each other, knowing the storm had finally passed, leaving a very different future in its wake.
