Chapter 6

The fragile peace of the estate shattered on a rainy Tuesday evening when the security alarms began to wail. The piercing shriek echoed through the stone corridors, instantly shattering the quiet domesticity Clara had grown accustomed to. Martha rushed into the nursery, her face pale with panic, and urged Clara to gather the baby and follow her down to the reinforced panic room located beneath the wine cellar. Clara’s heart hammered against her ribs, but years of living on the edge with Julian had taught her how to suppress panic in moments of crisis. She scooped the infant into her arms, wrapping the gray blanket securely around the child, and ran down the stairs behind Martha.

Upstairs, the heavy oak doors of the study and the sound of muffled shouting indicated a breach at the main perimeter gates. Luka Moretti was already in the central security hub, barking orders into a encrypted radio handset while monitoring a wall of high-definition camera feeds. Three black sedans had rammed through the outer security barrier, disgorging a dozen armed men dressed in tactical gear. They were moving with professional precision toward the main entrance, utilizing the cover of the torrential rain and darkness to mask their advance. Luka retrieved the heavy metal briefcase from his desk, unlocked it, and pulled out the firearm, checking the magazine with a practiced, mechanical click.

Down in the subterranean shelter, Clara held her breath in the dim light, listening to the muffled concussions of suppressed gunfire echoing from the grounds above. Every vibration through the concrete floor felt like a direct threat to her child. She whispered soothing lullabies into the baby's ear, though her own voice trembled uncontrollably. She understood now that her father’s enemies had found them, and the sanctuary was not as impenetrable as Luka had promised. They were actively hunting for her, driven by the belief that the child held the key to unlocating her father's hidden offshore accounts.

The gunfire upstairs ceased as abruptly as it had begun, leaving behind an agonizing silence that stretched for twenty endless minutes. Finally, heavy footsteps descended the stone staircase leading to the panic room. Clara braced herself, pressing her back against the reinforced wall and positioning her body to shield the infant. The heavy steel door swung open to reveal Luka Moretti. He had a shallow graze across his left temple, and his olive suit was stained with mud and soot, but his expression remained calm and collected. He holstered his weapon and told Clara the immediate threat had been neutralized, but their time at the estate had officially run out.
