Chapter 10

The bunker's atmosphere shifted from quiet tension to frantic preparation as the alarm klaxons blared a dull, rhythmic warning. Operatives moved through the concrete corridors with disciplined urgency, distributing ammunition, sealing blast doors, and setting up defensive perimeters around the main access tunnels. Clara stood in the center of the residential quarters, her baby resting peacefully in the crib, entirely oblivious to the impending violence. She packed a small shoulder bag with essentials, knowing that if the defenses failed, they would have to evacuate through the emergency sea-gate leading directly out into the freezing harbor waters.
Luka entered the room, stripping off his suit jacket and rolling up his sleeves to reveal a lean, muscular physique covered in faded scars from past conflicts. He strapped a tactical harness over his light shirt, sliding two extra magazines for his sidearm into their pouches. He looked at Clara with a seriousness that brooked no argument. He told her that Vance's assault force was moving through the abandoned utility tunnels directly beneath the harbor, and while the bunker's reinforced bulkheads would hold against small arms fire, they needed to prepare for a breach.

Clara looked Luka dead in the eye, refusing to shrink away from the harsh reality of their situation. She told him she was not going to hide in a corner while others fought and died for her safety. She pointed to the heavy metal briefcase resting by the desk—the very same briefcase Luka had opened in the hospital room weeks ago. She asked him to show her how to use the handgun inside. Luka stared at her for a long, agonizing moment, measuring her resolve, before slowly nodding. He walked over to the case, popped the latches, lifted out the steel weapon, and removed the magazine to demonstrate safety protocols.
Step by step, Luka taught her how to hold the grip, align the sights, and squeeze the trigger without jerking the barrel. Clara’s hands were steady as she practiced the movements under his watchful eye, transforming her fear into cold, focused determination. When the first muffled explosion reverberated through the concrete foundations of the bunker, shaking dust from the ceiling tiles, Clara did not flinch. She loaded a fresh magazine into the firearm, clicked the slide into place, and stood beside Luka near the doorway, ready to defend her child against whatever emerged from the smoke.
