Chapter 1

The sterile scent of antiseptic hung heavy in the quiet maternity ward, mingling with the metallic tang of fear and uncertainty. Clara sat upright against the elevated pillows of her hospital bed, her pale skin contrasting sharply against the dark waves of hair that fell loosely across her shoulders. In her arms, the newborn infant slept peacefully, wrapped securely within a coarse gray wool blanket that felt too heavy for such fragile life. Her eyes, rimmed with red and swimming with unshed tears, remained fixed on the tiny rise and fall of the child's chest. She could still feel the heavy thud of the hospital door closing behind Julian and Sarah, the friends who had promised to stand by her through the pregnancy, only to vanish the moment complication arose and the true cost of association became clear.

Luka Moretti stood motionless beside the mattress. Dressed impeccably in his olive green double-breasted suit over an unpretentious light shirt, he looked completely out of place amid the pastel walls and medical equipment, yet entirely in command of the space. His gaze was not cruel, but it possessed a terrifying detachment. When he spoke, his voice was a low, measured baritone that cut cleanly through the ambient hum of the monitors. He stated that the father was a coward, and Clara, her voice trembling with exhaustion and defiance, demanded to know his identity. Luka answered without hesitation, identifying himself with a calm certainty that left no room for argument.

Clara clutched the gray blanket tighter, her knuckles turning white. She had known Julian was weak, but the realization that he had fled the moment responsibility knocked felt like a physical blow to her chest. Luka pulled a sleek silver pen from his breast pocket, its metallic finish catching the fluorescent light of the room. He clicked it open with a sharp, mechanical snap that made Clara flinch. On the bedside table lay a single document, stark and intimidating against the wood grain. When Clara asked what he was doing, Luka replied that he was protecting what had been abandoned.

Before she could process the weight of his words, Luka reached for the heavy metal briefcase resting near the edge of the table. With a fluid motion, he popped the latches. The lid lifted to reveal a stark black interior lined with foam, cradling a heavy steel handgun. The weapon gleamed coldly in the harsh light, an undeniable symbol of the violent underworld Clara had spent her entire life trying to escape. Luka looked down at her, his expression unreadable, and delivered the final, chilling revelation that her own father had sent him to ensure their survival.
