Chapter 11

The second explosion was significantly larger, sending a violent shockwave rolling through the underground tunnels and plunging the bunker into momentary darkness before the emergency backup generators kicked in with a dull roar. Amber strobe lights flashed overhead, casting long, frantic shadows across the concrete walls. Through the reinforced glass of the command center observation window, Clara and Luka watched as the massive steel bulkhead at the end of the primary corridor buckled inward under the force of a heavy breaching charge. Sparks showered the floor as the locking pins sheared off one by one with deafening metallic cracks.
Luka positioned himself behind a concrete barrier near the doorway, gesturing for Clara to stay low behind the heavy oak desk that offered partial cover. He raised his weapon, his breathing slow and controlled, embodying the absolute restraint and lethal efficiency that defined his reputation. As the twisted steel of the bulkhead finally collapsed inward, a cloud of gray smoke billowed into the corridor. Through the haze, the first wave of Vance's mercenaries surged forward, clad in black tactical gear and raising their rifles to sweep the room.

The ensuing firefight was a concussive storm of noise and fury. Luka opened fire with disciplined, precise bursts, dropping the lead assailants before they could acquire their targets. Return fire chipped away at the concrete pillars, sending fragments of stone flying through the air. Clara crouched beside the desk, holding her breath while keeping one hand protectively over the baby monitor on the table. When a mercenary managed to slip past the crossfire and dart toward the residential quarters doorway, Clara did not hesitate. Remembering Luka's instructions, she raised the handgun, aligned the sights, and pulled the trigger.
The sharp report of the gunshot echoed in the small room, the recoil kicking back against her wrist. The intruder stumbled forward, dropping his weapon before collapsing onto the linoleum floor just feet from the crib. Clara lowered the smoking barrel, her heart pounding furiously against her ribs, but her mind remained ice-cold and clear. She had crossed a line from which there was no return, doing whatever was necessary to ensure her child survived. Luka glanced back through the smoke, giving her a single, affirming nod before turning his attention back to the primary breach.
