Chapter 4

The vehicle journey lasted nearly two hours, winding deeper into the wooded hills north of the city before turning onto a private asphalt drive flanked by towering iron gates. The gates swung open automatically as the SUV approached, revealing a sprawling stone estate that resembled a fortress more than a family home. High stone walls topped with security cameras and dense ivy surrounded the property, cutting it off completely from the outside world. Clara watched through the window as they drove past manicured lawns and towering pine trees, finally coming to a halt beneath the grand portico of the main entrance.
Luka stepped out first, scanning the perimeter with a sharp, practiced eye before opening Clara's door. He offered a steady hand to help her out of the vehicle, his expression remaining neutral. Inside, the foyer was vast and imposing, featuring high vaulted ceilings, polished marble floors, and dark oak paneling that absorbed the natural light. A middle-aged woman with silver hair pulled back into a neat bun stepped forward to greet them, her face etched with polite concern. This was Martha, the head housekeeper who had managed the estate for decades and understood the complex hierarchy of the household better than anyone else.

Martha immediately took charge of Clara's bags and led them up a grand staircase to a suite of rooms on the second floor. The nursery attached to the bedroom was already prepared, furnished with a handcrafted wooden crib, a rocking chair upholstered in soft cream fabric, and shelves stocked with supplies. It was an astonishing level of preparation for a arrival that had been arranged mere hours ago, a testament to the immense reach and efficiency of Luka's organization. Clara gently placed the sleeping baby into the crib, watching as the infant settled into the mattress with a soft sigh of contentment.
Later that afternoon, a soft knock signaled the arrival of Luka at her sitting room door. He entered holding a thick manila folder, his tie slightly loosened at the collar. He laid the folder on the mahogany desk, explaining that the men who had threatened Julian were already asking questions about her whereabouts. Luka made it clear that leaving the estate was not an option for the foreseeable future. Clara listened without interrupting, realizing the bitter truth of her situation. She had traded one cage for another, but looking around the safe, warm room, she knew this cage came with armed guards and a fighting chance.
