Chapter 5

Days bled into weeks within the stone walls of the estate, establishing a peculiar rhythm of safety and isolation. Clara spent most of her time in the nursery, bonding with her child while slowly regaining her physical strength. Martha proved to be a steadfast companion, bringing meals up on heavy silver trays and sharing quiet conversations about housekeeping and local folklore, carefully avoiding any mention of the violent underworld that paid her salary. Yet, the overwhelming silence of the house weighed heavily on Clara, driving an insatiable curiosity about the man who supposedly sent Luka to her rescue.
One afternoon, while searching the lower shelves of the mahogany desk for extra formula feeding charts, Clara's fingers brushed against a hidden compartment behind the drawer. Inside lay a smaller, leather-bound journal with yellowed pages and cracked spine. Opening it cautiously, she recognized her father's handwriting immediately—sharp, angular, and hurried. The entries detailed a life spent navigating double-crosses, illegal arms shipments, and the bitter betrayal of men he had once considered brothers. Toward the back of the journal, however, the tone shifted dramatically, focusing entirely on her mother's death and his profound regret over driving Clara away to protect her from his enemies.

The door to the study clicked open, and Luka walked in, freezing as he saw the open journal in her hands. For a fleeting second, his stoic mask slipped, revealing a flash of genuine discomfort. Clara looked up, her eyes burning with a mixture of grief and anger. She demanded to know why her father had never reached out himself, why he chose to hide behind heavily armed men and silent proxies instead of seeking forgiveness face-to-face. Luka closed the study door behind him, locking it with a quiet click before leaning back against the wood, crossing his arms over his chest.
Luka explained that her father was a dying man, consumed by illness and hunted by the very syndicate he had helped build. He had spent his final years purchasing safe havens and assembling a loyal faction, with Luka as his primary executor, specifically to ensure that Clara and her child would have a sanctuary when the inevitable reckoning arrived. The revelation stunned Clara into silence. The anger draining out of her, replaced by a hollow ache. She realized her father had never stopped watching over her, even from the darkest corners of his exiled existence.
