Chapter 9 - The Father’s Choice

David stood blocking the doorway, the heavy brass fireplace poker shaking violently in his grip as he looked between Marcus and the terrified ten-year-old boy. The ambient hallway light cast long, dramatic shadows across his face, highlighting the deep purple bags under his eyes and the agonizing conflict tearing him apart from the inside out.

"Get away from him, Marcus," David said, his voice trembling with a forced authority that failed to mask his underlying terror. "You shouldn't have come back here. Clara will kill us all."

"She’s already killing you, David, piece by piece," Marcus replied calmly, not taking a single step back, keeping his body positioned squarely between David and Leo. "You let her turn your home into a prison. You let her take Sarah, and now you’re letting her destroy Leo."

"I did it to keep him alive!" David shouted, his voice cracking as a stray tear finally broke free and tracked down his cheek. "You don't know what Clara is capable of when her funding gets threatened! The people backing her aren't just researchers; they're powerful, untouchable syndicate bosses!"

Leo stepped out from behind Marcus, his eyes blazing with a fierce, burning anger that completely overshadowed his fear. He looked at the man he had called Dad for his entire life, seeing right through the pathetic excuses for the first time.

"You didn't protect me, Dad," Leo said, his voice steady and cold, cutting deeper than any weapon. "You just watched. You let her hurt Lily, and you let her lie to me every single day."

David flinched as if he had been physically struck, lowering the brass poker slightly as the weight of his son's words crushed whatever resolve he had left. He looked down at the floor, unable to meet Leo’s accusing gaze.

"I’m sorry, Leo," David whispered, the words sounding hollow and pathetic even to his own ears. "I was just so tired of being afraid."

"Well, your fear time is over," a cold, melodic voice echoed from the hallway behind David.

Clara stepped into the doorway, her mustard yellow top pristine and unwrinkled, a small, chilling smile playing at the corners of her lips. In her arms, little Lily sat completely silent, staring blankly ahead. Behind Clara stood two broad-shouldered men in identical dark suits, holding sleek black suppression cases.

"Thank you for rounding them up in one place, David," Clara said smoothly, her eyes locking onto Marcus with venomous hatred. "It saves us so much time on cleanup."

Marcus didn't hesitate; he shoved Leo backward into the concealed wall recess behind the rocking chair, pulling a heavy-duty sidearm from his coat just as the lead syndicate operative raised a silenced pistol.
