Chapter 11 - The Drop-Chute Descent

With a desperate, silent heave, Leo lifted the heavy wooden floorboard just as Clara’s shadow fell across the masonry gap. Without hesitation, the ten-year-old boy dropped feet-first into the steep, slick metal chute, plunging downward through the dark interior of the house like a stone down a well.

He slammed onto a pile of old spare tires in the subterranean garage, the impact knocking the wind completely out of his lungs. Gasping and clutching his ribs, Leo forced himself up onto his hands and knees, scrambling behind a row of stacked storage bins just as the garage’s heavy overhead security door began to grind upward with a loud metallic groan.

Headlights cut through the gloom as a black SUV backed into the garage, its engine idling with a low, threatening rumble. Two syndicate men stepped out of the vehicle, carrying heavy steel crates labeled with biohazard warnings, while Clara watched from the interior doorway leading from the basement stairs.

"Sweep the lower level," Clara instructed the operatives, her voice carrying clearly across the concrete floor. "The boy couldn't have gotten far. Retrieve him before local law enforcement realizes Miller missed his check-in."

Leo crouched low behind a stack of winter tires, his eyes scanning the garage for an exit. The main overhead door was still only halfway up, but parked right beside it was David’s personal sedan, with the keys dangling casually from the ignition switch on the dashboard. It was a suicidal gamble, but it was his only chance to escape this nightmare alive.

Taking a deep, silent breath, Leo darted out from behind the tires, sprinting low across the open concrete floor toward the driver’s side door of the sedan. He grabbed the handle, pulled it open, and dove inside, his heart pounding a frantic rhythm in his ears.

He reached out, his trembling fingers closing around the keys in the ignition, and twisted them hard. The engine roared to life with a loud, aggressive purr that instantly alerted the syndicate operatives standing near the SUV.

"Hey! Stop that car!" one of the men shouted, drawing his sidearm and sprinting across the garage toward the accelerating sedan.

Leo slammed his foot down on the gas pedal, ignoring the crunch of plastic as the car clipped a storage shelf, and launched the vehicle straight toward the partially opened security door.

As the car burst out of the garage and into the cool night air, Leo glanced in the rearview mirror and saw something that froze his blood: Detective Miller, battered and bound, being dragged out into the light by Clara’s men.
