Chapter 2 - Whispers in the Foyer

David’s hands hovered inches from Clara’s shoulders, paralyzed by the three words she had just murmured under her breath. The righteous fury that had driven him through the front door vanished, replaced by a sudden, sickening compliance. He looked down at Lily, who had finally stopped crying and was now staring vacantly at the baseboard, and then at Leo, whose chest heaved with betrayal.

"David, take the boy upstairs," Clara instructed smoothly, her fingers finally unlatching from Lily’s hair as if nothing at all had happened. "We need to discuss family matters in private."

Leo backed away, shaking his head violently. "No! You hurt her, Dad! You saw what she was doing!"

David didn't look at his son. His eyes remained fixed on Clara, locked in a silent, terrifying negotiation that Leo could not begin to comprehend. The air in the hallway grew thick, suffocatingly heavy with a secret that David had apparently carried for years. Without a word of comfort to either child, David reached out and gripped Leo’s shoulder with a force that felt entirely alien.

"Go to your room, Leo," David said, his voice entirely devoid of its usual warmth. "Now."

Leo wrenched himself free from his father’s grip, stumbling backward until his spine hit the staircase banister. He looked between the two adults, realizing with a cold jolt of dread that he was completely alone. His father wasn't going to save them; his father was now part of the threat.

"What did she tell you?" Leo demanded, his voice dropping to a trembling whisper. "What is she holding over you?"

Clara smiled faintly, a chilling expression that failed to reach her eyes. She picked up Lily effortlessly, holding the toddler against her mustard yellow top like a pristine accessory rather than a living child.

"Some doors are never meant to be opened, sweetie," Clara said softly, turning toward the kitchen.

As Clara walked away, David finally turned to face his son, but before he could speak, a sharp knock echoed from the front door, followed immediately by the sound of the latch turning from the outside.
