Chapter 12 - Midnight Escape

The sedan fishtailed violently as Leo tore out of the residential driveway, spraying gravel across the manicured lawn before straightening out onto the deserted suburban street. The cool night air rushed in through the shattered driver’s side window he had left cracked, stinging his tear-streaked face. His hands gripped the steering wheel so tightly his knuckles were stark white, every bump in the road sending jarring shocks up his small frame.
He drove blindly for three miles, turning down winding neighborhood lanes until the houses gave way to thick, overgrown pine woods flanking the county highway. Pulling the sedan off onto a narrow dirt maintenance road, Leo cut the engine and killed the headlights, plunging the car into absolute darkness and suffocating silence.
Sitting alone in the stillness of the dashboard glow, the adrenaline finally began to fade, leaving behind a crushing wave of exhaustion and grief. He pulled the silver locket from his pocket, opening it once more to stare at the faded photograph of his real mother, Sarah.
"I'm sorry," Leo whispered into the empty cabin, a fresh wave of tears spilling over his cheeks. "I didn't know how to save them."
He looked at his wrist, tracing the distinct birthmark with his thumb. If Clara and her syndicate were running a black-market adoption and psychological profiling ring out of a suburban house, there had to be a paper trail—somewhere out in the real world, someone was looking for the missing children whose files he had seen in the bunker.
Leo reached across the center console and grabbed David’s smartphone, which had been left plugged into the dashboard charger. The screen lit up with a biometric lock screen. He tried his father’s birthday, his own birthday, and even Clara’s, but each attempt resulted in a sharp error buzz.
Frustrated, Leo stared at the screen saver—a family photo taken five years ago before Lily had even arrived. His eyes drifted to the date stamp in the corner: October 14. He tapped the numbers into the keypad.
Access Granted.
The phone unlocked, revealing a flood of recent text messages between David and an unknown contact labeled simply The Director. Leo’s breath caught as he scrolled down to the most recent message, sent less than an hour ago.
The package is secured. Proceed with the relocation protocol to Facility B at dawn.

Below the text was a GPS coordinate pointing to an abandoned industrial shipyard fifteen miles away on the edge of the dark harbor—and a second message containing a photo of Detective Miller tied to a chair, with Clara standing right beside him holding a silver syringe.
