Chapter 15 - Breaking the Cycle

The cold harbor wind whipped Clara’s blonde hair across her face as she hoisted Lily over the gunwale of the small RIB speedboat idling against the rotting wooden pier. Hearing footsteps splashing rapidly through the puddles behind her, Clara spun around, her hand dropping instinctively toward her coat pocket where she kept the sedative syringes.

"Stay back, Leo," Clara warned, her voice dripping with venomous control. "You don't belong in this world. You are just a subject, nothing more."

"I am a person," Leo shouted back, his voice steady, ringing clear and strong over the crashing waves against the pilings. "And you're done hurting people."

Before Clara could draw the syringe, Detective Miller stepped out from the shadows of the loading container, his service weapon raised and locked directly on her chest.

"Drop your weapon, Clara. It's over," Miller commanded, his voice echoing across the dark harbor.

Clara looked between the armed detective and the ten-year-old boy standing fearlessly before her. Realizing she had nowhere left to run and that her global syndicate had already remotely locked her out of their primary servers, she slowly withdrew her empty hand from her pocket and raised them both into the air, a cold, defeated sneer crossing her face.

Ten minutes later, the flashing red and blue lights of state police cruisers and federal ambulances illuminated the entire industrial shipyard. David was sitting in the back of an ambulance, blankets wrapped around his shoulders as paramedics tended to his minor injuries, weeping quietly as he watched Leo safely holding little Lily in his arms.

Marcus stood nearby, leaning against a police cruiser and nodding respectfully to the boy who had finally broken the cycle of silence.

"You did good, kid," Marcus said quietly. "Your real mother would be proud of you."

Leo looked down at Lily, who was no longer crying, her big eyes blinking calmly as she reached out to touch the silver locket hanging securely around his neck. The nightmare in the mustard yellow top was finally over, and for the first time in his life, Leo felt the warm, genuine embrace of a future he was going to build on his own terms.
