Chapter 10 - Crossfire in the Nursery

The sharp thip-thip of silenced gunfire shattered the tense silence of the guest bedroom, sending wood splinters flying from the doorframe as Marcus returned fire with calculated precision. The lead syndicate operative stumbled backward into the hallway, clutching his shoulder, while Clara calmly stepped out of the line of fire, her expression remaining entirely unfazed by the sudden violence.
"Get down, Leo!" Marcus yelled, keeping his body low as he fired another suppressive round toward the corridor.
Leo scrambled deeper into the dark recess behind the chimney stack, his heart hammering wildly against his ribs. Through a narrow gap in the old masonry, he watched in horror as David dropped the brass poker and lunged toward Clara, fueled by a sudden, desperate surge of long-overdue defiance.
"Enough, Clara! It ends today!" David roared, grabbing his wife by the shoulders in an attempt to pull her away from the syndicate men.
Clara didn't struggle. She simply looked at David with utter contempt, raising her hand with surgical precision and driving a small, hidden syringe straight into the side of his neck. David’s eyes widened in shock as the sedative hit his bloodstream instantaneously, his muscles turning to jelly before he collapsed heavily onto the carpeted floor.
"Such a disappointment," Clara murmured, stepping over her unconscious husband without a second glance.
Marcus fired his last remaining round, but his gun clicked empty on an empty chamber. The second syndicate operative lunged forward, slamming Marcus hard against the oak wall and driving the butt of his weapon into the older man's temple. Marcus slumped unconscious to the floor in a spreading pool of dark blood.
Silence descended on the room once more, broken only by the steady, mechanical breathing of the syndicate operative standing guard over the doorway. Clara walked slowly into the center of the room, looking down at Leo hiding in the masonry gap.
"Come out now, Leo," Clara commanded softly, her voice echoing with absolute authority. "Don't make this harder than it already has to be."
May you like
Leo pressed himself flat against the cold bricks, clutching the silver locket in his hand until the metal cut into his palm, realizing he had nowhere left to run. But as he reached behind his back, his fingers brushed against a heavy, loose floorboard concealing a secondary metal drop-chute leading directly down toward the underground garage.
