Chapter 3 - The Uninvited Guest

The heavy oak door swung open wide before David could reach it, revealing Detective Miller in a rumpled trench coat, holding a small manila folder. The sudden appearance of police inside the foyer instantly shifted the fragile dynamic of the household, causing David to stumble backward against the wall. Clara paused in the kitchen doorway, her posture rigid, though her face remained an impassive mask of innocence.

"Good evening, Mr. and Mrs. Evans," Detective Miller said, his sharp eyes scanning the anxious faces of the family. "I’m sorry to drop by unannounced, but we received an anonymous tip regarding concerning noises and child welfare checks at this specific address."

Leo’s heart leaped into his throat. He opened his mouth to shout out the truth—to tell the detective about the hair-pulling, the constant fear, and the bizarre control his mother held over the house—but a sudden, sharp cough from his father cut him off.

"There must be some misunderstanding, Officer," David said quickly, stepping forward with a forced, brittle smile. "We were just having a... family discussion."

"It didn't sound like a discussion from outside the porch," Miller replied smoothly, stepping past David without an invitation. "And the little boy looks rather distressed. Son, come here a moment."

Leo took a hesitant step forward, desperate for rescue, but as he looked at the detective, he noticed Miller’s eyes flicking toward a framed photograph on the hallway table—a picture of Clara smiling while holding a newborn baby who looked nothing like Lily.

"Everything is fine here, Detective," Clara called out from the kitchen, her voice carrying an eerie, melodic calm that made the hairs on Leo’s arms stand up. "Won't you step into the kitchen for some coffee while my husband explains?"

Miller didn't move. He kept his gaze locked on Leo, crouching down slightly to be at eye level with the trembling ten-year-old.

"Is everything really fine, son?" Miller asked quietly, placing a reassuring hand on Leo's shoulder. "You can tell me anything."

Leo opened his lips, the words of confession right on the tip of his tongue, when the living room grandfather clock suddenly chimed twice, and a hidden panel behind the coat rack gave a loud, metallic click.
