Chapter 8 - The Dossier’s Secret

The harsh green glow of the satellite communicator illuminated the dark, damp walls of the pumping station, casting eerie shadows across the concrete floor. David stared down at the small screen, his breath catching in his throat. The name 'Sarah Miller' sat squarely at the top of the Project Janus operational manifest, accompanied by her real-time federal clearance credentials, financial routing numbers, and a direct uplink to the Department of Defense intelligence database.

David slowly turned his head to look at her. Sarah was sitting on the cold floor, holding Noah tightly against her chest, but as she caught the look in David’s eyes, the color drained completely from her face. The exhaustion and fear in her expression instantly shifted into something much colder, much more calculated.

"You knew," David said, his voice barely above a whisper, heavy with betrayal. "All along. The break-in, the men outside, the teddy bears... you aren't running from Marcus Vance. You're working with him."

Noah looked up between them, his eyes wide and confused, tears welling up again. "Mom? What is Dad talking about? Why are you looking at him like that?"

Sarah didn't answer immediately. She gently set Noah down, standing up slowly and smoothing the wrinkles of her beige blouse with chilling composure. The trembling panic that had defined her demeanor moments before was completely gone, replaced by an unsettling, clinical calm. She reached into her pocket and pulled out a sleek, government-issue encrypted tablet, its screen glowing with the exact same security interface as the satellite communicator in David’s hand.

"I didn't want it to play out this way, David," Sarah said, her voice entirely devoid of emotion. "You were supposed to hand over the decrypted ledger quietly six months ago when the internal audit began. Instead, you played the devoted family man, hiding files inside stuffed animals and running to underground bunkers."

"You used our son as bait?" David shouted, stepping toward her, his fists clenched so tightly his knuckles turned white. "You let him get trapped behind that gate? You terrified an eight-year-old boy just to test if the encryption keys worked?"

"Noah was never in any real danger," Sarah replied coldly, gesturing vaguely toward the shadows of the tunnel behind them. "Marcus is an overzealous idiot who likes theatrics, but he follows orders. My directive was simple: secure the Department of Defense operational keys by any means necessary. You forced my hand by refusing to cooperate."

David felt his world crumbling beneath his feet. The woman he had loved, trusted, and built a life with for over a decade was a ghost working for the very intelligence apparatus that was now trying to silence them both. He instinctively took a step back, pulling Noah behind him once more, realizing that the pumping station wasn't a sanctuary at all—it was the designated rendezvous point.

From the dark upper catwalks of the pumping station, the steady, rhythmic clicking of a silver watch echoed through the damp air.

Marcus Vance stepped out from the shadows of the rusty iron stairs, wearing a sharp black jacket and a cold, calculating smile.
