Chapter 12 - The Safehouse Deviation

The heavy tires of the federal SUV hummed rhythmically against the cracked asphalt of the old industrial park road. Through the tinted rear windows, the sprawling concrete warehouses and rusted shipping containers loomed like monoliths in the grey pre-dawn light. David sat rigidly in the backseat, keeping Noah tucked safely against his side under the thermal blanket. Agent Vance sat in the front passenger seat, staring intently at his tablet, while two armed tactical officers flanked David in the back.

"Agent Vance, this isn't the route to the federal building downtown," David said, his voice flat and deliberate, cutting through the quiet hum of the engine.

Vance didn't look up from his screen. He simply tapped a few keys before responding. "Standard security protocol, David. When dealing with high-level intelligence leaks, we never use direct routes. We're stopping at a secondary staging point to secure the physical drives before heading to the main safehouse."

David didn't press the issue. He knew arguing would only alert them to the fact that he had read Sarah’s warning note. Instead, he subtly shifted his weight, sliding his hand down toward his belt where the secondary micro SD card was still concealed. If they were heading into a trap, he needed to be ready to move the second an opportunity presented itself.

The SUV slowed to a crawl, turning sharply through a rusted chain-link gate that hung crookedly from its hinges. They pulled up beside a windowless, concrete-reinforced bunker covered in government warning signs about restricted federal property. The engine was cut, and the sudden silence that followed was suffocating.

"All right, everyone out. Move efficiently," Vance ordered, opening his door and stepping out onto the gravel courtyard.

The two tactical officers in the back with David unbuckled their harnesses, gesturing for David and Noah to exit the vehicle. "Step out slowly, hands visible."

David nodded, scooping Noah up into his arms. As they stepped out into the cold morning air, David scanned the perimeter. There were no other federal vehicles, no medical support, no backup units—just this isolated concrete bunker and four heavily armed guards standing near the reinforced steel entrance. This wasn't a federal staging point; it was a black site.

"Right this way, David," Vance said, gesturing toward the heavy steel door as it hissed open with a pneumatic groan, revealing a stark, fluorescent-lit hallway inside.

David stopped dead in his tracks just at the threshold of the doorway. He looked directly at Vance, refusing to take another step forward. "I'm not going in there until you explain why my family was designated as collateral damage in a domestic surveillance op."

Vance’s professional demeanor melted away instantly, replaced by a cold, hardened stare. He slowly lowered his tablet, slipping his hand inside his jacket near his holster. "You were smart enough to decrypt the ledger, David. Surely you didn't think you'd walk away with the keys to the kingdom."

Before Vance could draw his weapon, the headlights of a second, unmarked vehicle suddenly blazed into high beams behind them, blinding the guards and pinning everyone in a harsh, glaring white light.
