Chapter 6 - The Second Bear

David froze, his breath catching in his throat as the beam of his flashlight illuminated the second brown teddy bear sitting quietly in the mud. It was an exact duplicate of the toy Noah was currently clutching in his arms—down to the uneven, dark brown threading along the spine. Sarah gasped, backing away until her shoulder hit the damp brick wall of the cellar.

"David... what is this? Why is there another one?" she whispered, her eyes darting frantically into the dark recesses of the underground passage.

David picked up the toy with his free hand, carefully working his fingers into the torn seam. Just like the first one, a small, hidden pocket within the stuffing yielded a hard object. He pulled it out: another micro SD card, slightly heavier, stamped with a different red serial code. The implications washed over him with chilling clarity. Noah hadn't just stumbled into a random trap; this estate, their home, had been thoroughly prepped long before they ever moved in. Every room, every hidden nook had been mapped and cataloged by someone who knew their daily routines intimately.

"They didn't just want the data, Sarah. They planted duplicates to frame us," David said, his voice laced with grim realization. "If the authorities find these cards in our possession, the trail leads straight to us as the masterminds behind the government hack."

Noah began to shiver violently, the cold damp air of the root cellar biting through his thin grey t-shirt. "Dad, I want to go home. The bad men are going to find us."

"They won't, buddy. I promise," David said, pulling off his light blue button-down shirt and wrapping it gently around the boy’s shoulders to keep him warm. He remained in his undershirt, the cool subterranean air raising goosebumps on his arms. He checked the satellite communicator. The green light was pulsing rhythmically now—downloading phase two. Seven minutes remaining.

Suddenly, a muffled heavy thud echoed from directly above them, shaking dust loose from the rotting wooden ceiling beams of the cellar. Heavy boots were pacing across the garden shed roof right above their heads.

"Sweep the grounds again! Vance wants every square inch of this property checked. If they’re burrowed under the earth, dig them out!" a gruff voice barked from outside.

The sound of a heavy industrial shovel scraping against the gravel outside sent a jolt of pure adrenaline through David’s veins. They were running out of time, and the subterranean hiding spot was about to be compromised. David scanned the dark length of the utility tunnel stretching into the pitch-black distance. According to the old architectural plans he had memorized years ago, this tunnel ran two hundred yards beneath the property line, exiting into an old pumping station near the lake.

"We move down the tunnel. Now," David commanded softly, taking Sarah’s hand.

They moved quickly and quietly through the narrow brick-lined conduit, the air growing increasingly stale as they pushed deeper into the earth. After walking for nearly five minutes in the stifling dark, the tunnel abruptly dead-ended into a solid, rusted steel bulkhead door equipped with a heavy digital keypad. David stepped up to the panel, his heart hammering. He pressed the emergency override sequence he had programmed years ago, but the screen flickered red, flashing a harsh, glaring error code.

System Locked. Biometric Authentication Required.

David stared at the screen in horror. Someone had remotely changed the master authorization code while they were underground.

Behind them, echoing down the long, hollow brick tube of the tunnel, came the unmistakable, horrifying sound of heavy combat boots splashing rapidly through the puddles, closing the distance fast.
