Chapter 1 - The Broken Gate

The afternoon sun beat down mercilessly on the sprawling green lawn of the secluded estate, casting long, fractured shadows across the rusted iron bars of the old security gate. Inside the enclosure, eight-year-old Noah pressed his pale face against the cold metal, his messy dark hair damp with sweat and tears. His grey t-shirt was stained with dirt, clinging to his small frame as he wept desperately. His thin fingers wrapped around the vertical bars, shaking them with frantic, exhausted desperation.

"Dad! Please come here!" Noah sobbed, his voice cracking with sheer terror.

Across the manicured grass, David sprinted with everything he had, his light blue button-down shirt billowing behind him and his dark trousers catching on the high blades of turf. His chest heaved with ragged breaths, his eyes wide with absolute panic as he closed the distance between them.

"Noah! What happened?" David shouted, his voice laced with adrenaline and disbelief.

He reached the heavy gate, his hands slamming against the ironwork before he found the manual release latch hidden behind the overgrown ivy. With a metallic groan, the barrier swung wide. David dropped to his knees, pulling Noah into his arms and crushing him against his chest in a fierce, protective embrace.

"I’m here. You’re okay," David whispered softly into the boy's hair, his own voice trembling.

Standing a few feet away, Sarah stood frozen. Her blonde hair fell loosely around her shoulders, and her beige blouse fluttered in the sudden autumn breeze. Her hands covered her mouth, her face pale with shock and profound concern. She looked past David, scanning the empty perimeter of the courtyard as if expecting someone to step out of the shadows.

"He was here, Mom. The man with the cold eyes," Noah whimpered into David’s shoulder, clutching an old brown teddy bear with a violently torn and stitched seam on its back.

David pulled back, his brow furrowing as he noticed the toy. Without a word, he reached out and slid his fingers into the ragged opening of the plush bear, pulling apart the coarse threads. Inside the dark stuffing, his fingers brushed against a hard piece of plastic. He withdrew a tiny micro SD card, holding it out on his open palm. He stared down at it, the blood draining completely from his face, while Sarah stared in sheer disbelief.

"What’s on this?" David whispered.

Before Sarah could answer, the security lights along the perimeter fence flickered off, plunging the yard into sudden, suffocating darkness.
