Chapter 13 - The High-Beam Interruption

The blinding glare of the high beams washed over the concrete courtyard, casting long, sharp shadows across the bunker entrance. The guards instantly scrambled, raising their tactical rifles toward the newly arrived vehicle as tires screeched against the gravel. A sleek black sedan slid to a hard, aggressive stop directly blocking the bunker’s exit path.

The driver’s side door flew open, and a figure stepped out into the harsh light, holding a heavy-duty tactical flare that hissed and spat bright crimson sparks into the morning air.

"Drop your weapons! Federal Marshals! Lower your firearms immediately!" a sharp, commanding female voice rang out across the yard.

Vance’s face twisted in sheer disbelief and fury as he recognized the agent stepping out of the sedan. It wasn't local backup; it was Director Keller, the head of the independent oversight commission that had been quietly investigating Project Janus for over a year.

"Agent Vance, stand down!" Keller shouted, her weapon drawn and locked squarely on Vance’s chest. "You are in direct violation of federal oversight protocols. Step away from the civilian."

Vance’s hand froze inches from his holster. He looked between Keller and the armed marshals fanning out from the secondary vehicle, realizing his black-site detention play had just been thoroughly intercepted. He forced a tight, brittle smile, slowly raising his hands into the air.

"Director Keller. I was merely executing a secure asset retrieval under emergency directive theta," Vance said smoothly, trying to salvage his authority.

"Emergency directives don't apply to extra-judicial black-site detentions, Vance. Your clearance has been revoked as of four minutes ago," Keller replied coldly. She motioned to the tactical officers flanking her. "Disarm him and take him into custody."

David let out a long, shuddering breath, the immense weight of the morning finally pressing down on his shoulders. He tightened his grip on Noah, who buried his face in David’s shoulder, exhausted by the endless terror of the night.

Agent Vance was wrestled to the ground and zip-tied by the marshals, his silver watch clinking against the gravel as he was hauled toward the back of the transport car. As he was pushed inside, Vance turned his head, locking eyes with David one last time with an expression of venomous warning.

Director Keller walked over quickly, lowering her weapon and offering David a reassuring, empathetic look. "Are you alright, David? Is the boy hurt?"

"We're physically fine, Director. Just... tired," David replied, his voice raspy. He reached into his pocket and handed the secondary micro SD card directly to Keller. "The complete unredacted server logs for Project Janus. Every file, every backdoor access key, every corrupt official involved."

Keller took the card, her eyes widening as she realized the massive significance of what she was holding. "You actually pulled it off, David. This is the smoking gun we’ve needed to dismantle the entire operation from the top down."

"It's not over yet," David said grimly, recalling the warning note Sarah had left in the teddy bear. "The master server in Arlington is still active. If we don't shut it down manually from the inside, their fail-safes will wipe the entire network before noon."

Keller’s expression turned grim. She nodded decisively, opening the door of her sedan. "Then we ride to Arlington. Right now."
