Chapter 14 - The Arlington Breach

The unmarked federal sedan tore down the interstate toward Washington, D.C., the digital dashboard clock ticking rapidly toward the noon deadline. In the backseat, David held Noah close, watching the concrete skyline of the city loom closer through the tinted windows. Director Keller sat in the front passenger seat, communicating in rapid, hushed tones over the encrypted radio with federal strike teams positioning themselves around the Department of Defense headquarters in Arlington.

"We have twenty minutes before the automated fail-safes kick in and purge the Project Janus primary server," Keller said, turning back to look at David with serious resolve. "Once we breach the server room, you'll have to input the master cryptographic sequence manually using the micro SD card."

"I'm ready," David said firmly, though his hands still trembled slightly from the sheer exhaustion of the past twenty-four hours. He looked down at Noah, who had finally fallen asleep against his shoulder, his breathing steady and peaceful for the first time since the ordeal began.

The car pulled up to a nondescript, heavily guarded concrete service entrance at the rear of the sprawling federal complex. Unlike a violent raid, Keller’s high-level oversight credentials allowed them to pass through the perimeter checkpoints without resistance. The heavy steel security doors slid open smoothly, admitting the car directly into the subterranean underground parking garage.

They stepped out into the fluorescent-lit sterility of the federal facility. Armed guards stood at attention near the elevators, but at Keller’s command, they stepped aside, granting immediate access to the sub-level zero server vaults—the inner sanctum of the intelligence network.

The elevator doors slid open with a soft chime, revealing a massive, cathedral-like room filled with rows upon rows of towering server racks, their blue and green indicator lights blinking in unison like a digital heartbeat. In the center of the room stood the primary terminal console for Project Janus.
