Chapter 11 - The Hidden Note

The cool morning breeze hit David’s face as he stepped out of the dark pumping station, holding Noah’s small, cold hand tightly. Emergency vehicles lined the gravel drive, their red and blue lights painting the trees in flashing strokes of color. Medics rushed over with thermal blankets, wrapping them around David and the boy to ward off the chill of the subterranean dampness. Agent Vance was standing by the open door of an SUV, reviewing the decrypted data files on a ruggedized laptop.

"The automated transfer is holding, David," Vance called out, looking up with a relieved nod. "We’ve already frozen three major offshore accounts linked to the primary shell companies. Marcus and Sarah are singing already. It's completely blown wide open."

David gave a tired nod, but his thoughts were elsewhere. His hand brushed against the paw of the old brown teddy bear he was still carrying. His fingers caught on a stiff, folded edge of paper tucked deep within the worn fabric lining—a place neither Marcus nor the tactical team had thought to check. He gently extracted the small note, keeping it hidden from the view of the federal agents nearby.

He unfolded the paper under the glow of the SUV’s interior light. Written in Sarah’s neat, hurried handwriting were only a few lines:

The ledger you decrypted is a decoy. The real Project Janus master server isn't offshore—it's housed inside the federal facility in Arlington. If you want to protect Noah, do not trust Agent Vance. They are still watching.

David’s breath hitched in his throat. The cold reality of the situation crashed back over him with terrifying force. The raid, the federal backup, the easy arrest of Marcus and Sarah—it had all happened too smoothly. It was a staged containment operation designed to make David think the threat had been neutralized, while the actual conspiracy remained entirely intact at the highest levels of government.

"Dad? Are we going home now?" Noah asked softly, looking up at him with tired, hopeful eyes.

Before David could answer, Agent Vance walked over, closing his laptop with a sharp click. "We're heading back to the field office for debriefing, David. You and Noah will be placed in secure protective custody until the formal hearings begin tomorrow morning."

"Protective custody where?" David asked, his voice carefully neutral as he slipped the hidden note into his pocket.

"A secure federal safehouse just outside the city," Vance replied, offering a reassuring, professional smile that didn't quite reach his eyes. "Completely isolated. Safe from any remaining rogue operatives."

David looked at Vance, noticing the subtle, rhythmic tapping of a silver watch on the agent's wrist—the exact same watch Marcus had been wearing just moments before. The realization sent a cold shiver down David’s spine. Vance wasn't the savior; he was the handler.

"Sounds fine," David said quietly, hiding his trembling hands inside his jacket pockets. "Lead the way."

As they climbed into the back of the unmarked federal SUV, the heavy doors slammed shut with a definitive, ominous thud. David pulled Noah close, whispering into the boy's ear to stay quiet, while through the bulletproof rear window, he watched the safehouse road diverge toward an abandoned industrial park instead of the city.
