Chapter 8 - The Emergency Injunction

The air in the ballroom had grown thick and suffocating by the time Clara pushed her way back through the office door, following the frantic groomsman. The festive decorations now looked tragic and mocking against the backdrop of an unfolding family catastrophe.
At the center of the polished dance floor, her elderly father lay flat on his back, his silver head cradled gently in the lap of a panicked family friend who was desperately trying to loosen his tight silk tie. A faint, ragged gasp escaped the old man’s lips as he clutched frantically at his left chest pocket.
"Call 911! Somebody call an ambulance right now!" Maya screamed, sprinting past Clara and dropping to her knees beside their father, grabbing his cold, shaking hand.
Standing just a few feet away from the medical emergency, completely indifferent to the human suffering at his feet, was a tall, sharp-featured man in an expensive charcoal-grey suit. He held a leather briefcase in one hand and a thick sheaf of legal papers in the other.
As Clara approached, the man stepped forward, blocking her path with an air of cold, bureaucratic authority.
"Are you Clara Vance—legally known as Clara Hayes?" the man asked, his voice dripping with synthetic professionalism.
Clara stopped dead in her tracks, her eyes darting between her struggling father and the arrogant stranger. "I am Clara Vance. Get out of my way or I will have you physically thrown out of this building."
"I am Arthur Pendelton, senior legal counsel for Vance Holdings," the man announced loudly, ensuring the remaining guests standing along the perimeter could hear every word. "I am here to serve you with an immediate emergency restraining order and asset seizure injunction issued by the federal district court."
He thrust the thick stack of papers toward Clara’s chest. She didn't take them. Instead, she let the documents slip from his grip and fall unceremoniously to the sticky dance floor.
"My father is having a heart attack," Clara said, her voice trembling with a terrifying, controlled fury as she stepped right up to the attorney, forcing him to take a defensive step backward. "And you are standing there waving fraudulent paperwork while a man's life hangs in the balance. Have you no human decency?"
The attorney didn't blink. He adjusted his gold-rimmed glasses and pointed a polished pen toward the floor. "Your father's medical emergency is unfortunate, Ms. Vance, but it does not supersede federal jurisdiction. According to the asset forfeiture filing, every property, bank account, and business asset registered under your family name has been officially frozen as proceeds of financial crime."
Maya looked up from her father’s side, tears streaming freely down her face as she glared up at the lawyer with pure venom. "You're lying! Julian set this up! He hacked the systems and framed us!"
"Mr. Julian Vance acted entirely within the framework of corporate compliance," the attorney replied smoothly, showing not an ounce of sympathy. "Furthermore, our firm has just received notification that Clara Vance attempted to initiate an unauthorized transfer of remaining corporate funds out of state less than ten minutes ago."
Clara stared at the man, the pieces finally snapping into place. Julian hadn't just escaped; he had left a live landmine behind to detonate the moment she tried to investigate his digital footprint.
"That's a complete fabrication," Clara said coldly. "The venue's security logs prove your client hacked our network to manipulate those transfers."
"Prove it to a federal judge from a jail cell, then," the attorney sneer-smiled, turning sharply on his heel just as the shrill, distant sirens of approaching paramedics began to wail outside the venue doors.
As medical personnel rushed past the entrance with a clattering gurney, Clara knelt beside her father, brushing his damp white hair from his forehead. Her father opened his hazy eyes, gripped her wrist with surprising strength, and whispered something so faint that only she could hear.
"Don't... let him win, sweetheart," the old man wheezed before his eyes rolled back, and the paramedics forcefully pushed Clara back to begin chest compressions.

Maya buried her face in her hands, sobbing uncontrollably as the heart monitor machine wheeled in by the medics emitted a long, continuous, terrifying beep.
