Chapter 2 - The Echo of Blackmail

The abruptness of Julian’s threat hung in the thick air between them, freezing Clara in place as she held the delicate white tissue. The romantic strains of the string quartet drifted from the far corner of the ballroom, offering a cruel contrast to the venomous words that had just been spoken.

Clara slowly rose back to her feet, her hands trembling slightly against the intricate lace of her wedding gown. She stared at the man she had promised to spend the rest of her life with, realizing with terrifying clarity that she truly did not know him at all.

"What did you just say?" Clara asked, her voice dangerously quiet, though her heart hammered frantically against her ribs.

Julian glanced around nervously, checking to see if any of the nearby wedding guests had overheard his whispered ultimatum. A forced, sickly-sweet smile pasted itself onto his face for the benefit of an elderly couple waving from a nearby table, before he turned his cold gaze back to his bride.

"You heard me, Clara," Julian muttered through clenched teeth, leaning in close so only she could hear. "Your father’s entire construction business didn't just magically bounce back from bankruptcy last year. Do you really think the bank investigations stopped on their own?"

Clara’s breath hitched. A cold sweat broke out across the back of her neck. "What do you know about my father's business?"

"I know everything," Julian said with a chilling calmness. "I have the financial ledgers, the offshore account numbers, and the signed wire transfers that prove your dear old dad embezzled three million dollars from municipal pension funds. One phone call from me tomorrow morning, and he spends the rest of his golden years behind federal bars."

The room seemed to spin around Clara. The sparkling lights, the murmuring guests, and the sweet scent of floral arrangements blurred into a chaotic vortex. Her father, a man she revered as an honorable pillar of the community, framed as a criminal? And Julian had possessed this damning evidence all along, using it not to save her family, but as a leash to control her.

"You're bluffing," Clara whispered, though the sudden terror in her eyes betrayed her. "If my father is guilty, you're an accessory for sitting on that information."

"Try proving that," Julian smirkhed, adjusting his cufflinks with infuriating nonchalance. "My name isn't on a single document. But your father's signature is on all of them. So, here are your choices, gorgeous. We walk out of these double doors together, pretend everything is picture-perfect, board our flight to Europe tonight, and I keep your family's dirty little secret locked away forever. Or, you make a scene right now, ruin the party, and watch your father's legacy burn to ash before midnight."

Clara stood paralyzed, the tissue from little Leo clutched tightly in her fist. She looked across the room and spotted her elderly father sitting at the head table, laughing heartily as he raised a glass of champagne with his lifelong friends. He looked so frail, so completely unaware of the executioner standing right beside his daughter.

Before Clara could force a response past the heavy lump in her throat, a heavy hand firmly gripped her bare shoulder from behind.

"Excuse me, sister," a sharp, trembling voice whispered right into her ear. "You need to look at this right now. It's not just your father."
