Chapter 6 - The Screen in the Office

The frantic pounding on the private office door reverberated through the quieted ballroom, cutting sharply through the murmurs of the stunned guests. Clara pushed herself up from the carpet, smoothing out the rumpled fabric of her lace-sleeved wedding gown with hands that still refused to stop shaking.

Maya stood beside her, wiping a stray tear from her cheek and staring apprehensively toward the heavy wooden office door. "Who is that? Did one of the federal agents come back?"

"No," Clara whispered, recognizing the strained, familiar voice of Thomas, the venue’s head coordinator. "That's Thomas. Stay here."

Clara walked across the sticky, champagne-spilled floor, pushing open the private office door where Thomas stood illuminated by the pale blue glow of a massive bank of security monitors. His face was drenched in sweat, and his eyes were wide with sheer panic as he pointed a trembling finger at the central screen.

"Clara, thank God," Thomas gasped, grabbing a bottle of water from a nearby desk and taking a hurried gulp. "You need to see this footage before the police confiscate the hard drive. I pulled it from the perimeter cameras five minutes ago."

Clara stepped closer to the monitors, her breath catching in her throat. The camera angle showed the rear loading dock of the hotel, where Julian had supposedly been escorted away in handcuffs. But the scene unfolding on the high-definition screen did not match the federal arrest they had just witnessed in the ballroom.

On the monitor, the two plainclothes men who had identified themselves as federal agents were standing casually beside an unmarked black SUV. Julian was standing right there with them, unbound by handcuffs, laughing quietly as he handed a thick brown envelope filled with cash to Agent Miller.

Clara’s stomach dropped into a bottomless abyss. "They... they aren't federal agents."

"Not by a long shot," Thomas confirmed grimly, clicking his mouse to pull up another camera angle from the underground parking garage. "Look at this one. This was recorded twenty minutes before the ceremony started."

The screen flickered, showing Julian standing in a shadowy corner of the parking garage, handing a blueprint and a set of master keys to a stranger wearing an identical dark trench coat. They shook hands, exchanging a quick, conspiratorial nod.

"It was all theater," Clara murmured, the horrifying realization washing over her in a freezing wave. "The entire federal raid, the fake badges, the arrest... it was a staged extraction. He didn't get caught by the feds; he paid them off to stage his arrest so he could slip out the back door with all my father's stolen money without a public scene."

Maya, who had slipped quietly into the office behind Clara, let out a sharp gasp as she watched the monitor playback. "And he left you behind with the forged signature documents so the actual police would come after you instead of him. He framed you twice—once financially, and once as his fleeing accomplice!"

Clara stared at the screen, the initial shock slowly giving way to a cold, burning anger that settled deep within her chest. The weeping bride everyone had pitied a few moments ago was gone. In her place stood a woman whose life had just been systematically dismantled, and who now wanted nothing less than total retribution.

"We need to call the real police, Thomas," Clara said, her voice eerily calm and steady as she turned toward the coordinator. "Not local dispatch. We need the state police cyber crimes division."

Thomas nodded frantically, reaching for his desk phone. But before his fingers could even touch the keypad, the main computer monitor suddenly flashed bright red, overriding the security camera feed with a full-screen text prompt that made all three of them freeze in absolute horror.
