Chapter 7 - The Red Screen Override

The bright red glow from the computer monitor cast an eerie, blood-colored hue across the small office walls. Across the center of the screen, bold white letters began typing themselves out line by line in real-time, as if someone were sitting at a remote keyboard directly controlling the venue’s master network.

SECURITY OVERRIDE SUCCESSFUL, the text flashed. ALL LOCAL FOOTAGE DELETED. ACCOUNT TRANSFERS FINALIZED.

Thomas slammed his hand down on the desk, his face twisting in disbelief. "What the hell? That's impossible! Our local server is physically isolated from the internet. How did anyone bypass the firewall?"

Clara stepped closer to the screen, her eyes tracking the rapidly scrolling lines of code and data packets. At the bottom of the screen, a digital signature appeared beneath a flashing skull icon: VANCE_FINANCIAL_GROUP_SECURE_NODE.

"He didn't need internet access," Clara said, her voice dangerously quiet as pieces of the puzzle clicked together in her mind. "Julian installed the venue's upgraded guest Wi-Fi router himself three weeks ago. He said it was a wedding gift to help us stream the ceremony to our overseas relatives. It was a backdoor access point all along."

Maya gripped the edge of the desk, her knuckles turning white. "So he's been hacking into the hotel's main system from his phone this entire time? Even while standing at the altar?"

"Especially while standing at the altar," Clara replied, turning away from the monitor and walking toward the office window that overlooked the rear alleyway.

Down below, the unmarked black SUV they had seen on the security monitor was just pulling away from the loading bay, its taillights cutting a sharp red line through the misty evening air. Through the tinted back window, Clara could distinctly see the silhouette of Julian leaning back against the leather seat, casually sipping a glass of champagne as he disappeared into the night.

"We can't let him get out of the county," Maya urged, grabbing her phone from her pocket with trembling fingers. "Let's call highway patrol right now. Give them the license plate number from the monitor!"

"The license plate on that SUV was stolen off a rusted sedan in the airport parking garage two days ago," Clara said without turning around, her reflection staring back at her in the window glass—a bride in a ruined dress, stripped of her innocence, her money, and her future. "By the time highway patrol tracks it, he'll already be boarding a private charter flight out of state."

Thomas swallowed hard, running a hand through his damp hair. "Clara, what are you going to do? Your father's entire fortune is gone, your name is tied to illegal offshore accounts, and the real authorities are going to kick down these doors any minute once they trace those fraudulent wire transfers back to this IP address."

Clara turned around slowly, her posture rigid, her tear-stained face replaced by an expression of cold, unyielding resolve. She walked over to the desk, picked up the discarded manila envelope containing the devastating documents, and tucked it securely beneath her arm.

"I'm not going to run, Thomas," Clara said softly, adjusting the lace sleeves of her wedding gown. "And I'm not going to wait for the police to come arrest me for crimes I didn't commit."

Maya frowned, stepping into her path. "Then what's your plan? Where are you going?"

Before Clara could answer, the office door swung open with a loud bang, and a breathless groomsman stumbled inside, pointing frantically back toward the main ballroom.

May you like

"Clara! You need to come out to the dance floor immediately," the groomsman shouted, gasping for air. "Your father just collapsed, and standing over him is a man claiming to be Julian's primary attorney with an emergency court injunction."
