Chapter 11 - The Shadow in the Hallway

The heavy iron wrench caught the pale hallway light, casting a long, jagged shadow across the patterned carpet of the venue office. Clara’s breath caught in her throat as she slowly backed away from the desk, her hand instinctively sliding into the deep folds of her wedding gown to grip the small flash drive hidden in her pocket.
Thomas froze, his eyes locked on the doorway, unable to form words as the silhouette stepped fully across the threshold.
"Who's there?" Thomas finally managed to choke out, his voice cracking with rising panic. "Security is already on site! We've called the authorities!"
The figure stepped out of the shadows, lowering the wrench with a heavy, metallic thud against the floorboards. It wasn't an assassin or one of Julian’s hired thugs. It was Marcus, the veteran head bartender of the reception hall, his tuxedo vest unbuttoned and his forehead glistening with nervous sweat.
"Relax, man, it's just me," Marcus breathed heavily, wiping his hand across his brow. "I saw someone lurking around the service corridor outside the back exit. I thought it might be that scumbag groom coming back to finish destroying the place."
Clara exhaled a shaky breath, letting go of the tension in her shoulders, though her instincts remained razor-sharp. "Marcus, what were you doing in the service corridor?"
"I was checking the inventory for the open bar tabs before the police shut down the venue," Marcus explained, stepping further into the room and glancing nervously at the glowing computer monitors showing the warehouse feed. "What is that? Is that live security footage of Julian?"
"It's a broadcast from an off-site server," Clara replied quietly, stepping around the desk to stand beside Thomas. "He's not running away, Marcus. He's baiting us."
Marcus frowned, crossing his arms over his chest. "Baiting you into what? Clara, you need to get out of this dress, leave this building, and go be with your father at the hospital. Let the feds handle this lunatic."
"The feds don't know what we know," Clara said with fierce determination. She pointed toward Mercy General Hospital on her phone's GPS map, then tapped the screen where Maya's text message about the downtown Federal Reserve safety deposit box still glowed. "My father kept a physical ledger of every transaction Julian ever forced him to sign. It's locked inside a private vault downtown, and Julian knows it."
Marcus shook his head vehemently. "Downtown? Clara, it's midnight. The Federal Reserve isn't open to the public, and if Julian's men are tracking your family's assets, they'll be waiting for you the second you step foot inside that building."
"They'll be expecting me to panic and run," Clara said, her voice dropping to a dangerous, steady whisper. "Instead, I'm going to walk right into the vault, retrieve the ledger, and end this nightmare on my own terms."
Thomas stared at her in sheer disbelief. "Clara, you're wearing a wedding gown! You can't go hunting for criminal evidence looking like a runaway bride!"
"Why not?" Clara countered, a grim, humorless smile touching the corners of her lips. "Everyone in this city already knows what I look like today. Let them see me coming."
Before Marcus or Thomas could argue further, the office landline phone suddenly began to ring with a sharp, piercing trill that made everyone jump.
Thomas stared at the blinking red light on the base of the phone, his face draining of color. "Don't answer that. It could be anyone."
The phone kept ringing, its rhythmic pulse demanding attention in the silent room. Clara stepped forward, ignored Thomas's warning, and pressed the speakerphone button.
"Speak," Clara commanded into the receiver.
A familiar, smooth, mocking voice filled the small office, accompanied by the faint background sound of roaring jet engines.
“Hello, my beautiful bride,” Julian’s voice purred through the speaker. “Did you enjoy the little video I left for you? I hope you brought your walking shoes, because your father’s safety deposit box key is currently ticking down on a very interesting timer. You have exactly forty-five minutes to reach the vault before everything your family ever built turns into smoke.”
May you like
The line clicked dead with a sharp tone, leaving the room wrapped in absolute, suffocating silence.
