Chapter 5 - The Signature on the Warrant

The chaotic noise of the ballroom faded into a distant, muffled hum as Clara’s eyes locked onto the final page of the dossier clutched in her trembling hands. The bold print at the top of the paper read Primary Beneficiary and Co-Signer Authorization.
There, stamped in clear blue ink at the bottom of a fraudulent offshore banking account, was a signature she recognized better than her own. It wasn’t her father’s name. It was hers.
Clara let out a ragged gasp, the paper fluttering from her numb fingers back down to the carpet. She looked up just as Agent Miller guided a handcuffed Julian toward the exit doors. Julian paused over his shoulder, flashing a grim, triumphant smile that chilled Clara to her very core.
"You signed every single authorization form six months ago, darling," Julian called out loudly enough for the front rows of guests to hear, before the agents forcefully propelled him through the double doors. "You're my legal co-conspirator. Welcome to federal prison."
The heavy oak doors slammed shut behind them, sealing off the departure with a resounding thud that echoed through the stunned silence of the reception hall.
Maya dropped down to her knees beside Clara, her eyes swimming with tears as she grabbed her sister's shoulders. "Clara, I am so, so sorry. I didn't know until this afternoon. When I found his secondary briefcase in the study while looking for the guest book spare pens, I opened the safe... and found all of this. He forged your signature on those financial papers, Clara. He set you up to take the fall if the feds ever closed in."
Clara couldn't speak. Her vocal cords felt paralyzed. The romantic fairytale she had believed she was stepping into had turned out to be an elaborate, malicious trap designed to sacrifice her freedom for his crimes.
Across the room, their elderly father was being steadied by two family friends, his face pale and contorted with shock and confusion. He was pointing a shaky finger toward the doors, trying to shout questions that no one dared to answer.
The wedding photographer stood awkwardly near the edge of the dance floor, his camera lens still pointed at Clara, capturing every tear, every tremor, and every agonizing second of her public humiliation.
Maya reached out and gently squeezed Clara’s icy hand. "We have to leave right now, before the federal agents start asking you official questions. I left my car idling in the back alley. We can go straight to a criminal defense attorney I called on the way here."
Clara stared down at her pristine white wedding gown, now stained with dust from the carpet where she had knelt. She slowly shook her head, a strange, grim resolve beginning to harden beneath her shock. Running away would only make her look guilty. If Julian wanted a war, she wouldn't hide from him.
Just as Clara started to push herself up off the floor, a heavy, urgent knock echoed from the private bridal suite office door located at the back of the reception hall, followed by a frantic voice calling out her name.

"Clara! Open the door! You need to see what's playing on the venue's security monitors right now!"
