Chapter 10 - The Warehouse Feed

The harsh blue light of the offline terminal illuminated Clara’s pale face as she stared at the text file blinking on the monitor. Below the menacing title, Julian’s precise, clinical typing scrolled across the screen in real-time, as if he were sitting right beside her in the dark room.

“If you’re reading this, Clara, it means your father survived long enough to reach the hospital, which is unfortunate for your monthly budget,” the digital letter began. “The flash drive you picked up isn't a trap; it’s your final exit strategy. Or your final grave.”

Thomas leaned over Clara’s shoulder, his eyes darting frantically across the lines of text. "Clara, this is insane. We need to hand this drive over to the real authorities immediately. This proves he's communicating with us directly."

"The authorities are three steps behind him, Thomas," Clara replied, her voice eerily calm as her fingers danced across the keyboard, maximizing the live video window embedded at the bottom of the screen. "Look at the warehouse feed. Do you recognize that location?"

The live video feed showed a vast, cavernous industrial space filled with towering stacks of wooden shipping crates and rusted steel beams. In the center of the room sat a single wooden chair, illuminated by a swinging overhead work light. Tied securely to the chair with heavy industrial zip-ties was a man in a dark suit—not her father, but Arthur Pendelton, the very attorney who had served her with the injunction less than an hour ago.

Thomas gasped, stumbling backward against the office bookshelf. "Isn't that... isn't that his lawyer? Why would Julian tie up his own legal counsel?"

"Because lawyers are only useful until they become liabilities," Clara said, her eyes narrowing as she watched the video.

On the screen, a figure stepped out from the shadows behind the tied-up attorney. It was Julian, still wearing his immaculate tuxedo jacket, though his bowtie was undone and hanging loosely around his collar. He held a smartphone in one hand and a small silver hard drive in the other.

Julian leaned down, whispering something into Pendelton’s ear that made the attorney thrash violently against the zip-ties, his muffled screams echoing through the tin-roofed warehouse.

Then, Julian looked directly up into the security camera lens, as if he knew Clara was watching the live feed in real-time right from the venue office. A slow, chilling smile spread across his face.

“Surprise, darling,” Julian’s recorded voice echoed through the office speakers as he triggered an audio file attached to the flash drive. “Your dear lawyer tried to run off with our second offshore server in the Cayman Islands. Greed is such an ugly trait, isn't it? Much like yours.”

On the screen, Julian tossed the silver hard drive into a large industrial metal shredder standing against the back wall, pressing the green activation button. The machine whined loudly, grinding the precious evidence of their financial empire into useless metallic dust in a matter of seconds.

Clara felt a cold shiver run down her spine. Julian wasn't just hiding from the law; he was systematically eliminating every loose end tied to his operation, starting with his own legal team, while casually leaving breadcrumbs specifically designed to lure Clara out into the open alone.

"Clara, we have to call the police right now," Thomas insisted, his voice trembling as he reached for his cell phone. "He's completely unhinged. He's showing you murders in progress!"

"If we call the local police, they'll trace the ping to an abandoned shipping yard two hours outside the city," Clara said, standing up abruptly from the desk. "By the time tactical units arrive, the warehouse will be empty, and Julian will be airborne."

Maya’s phone suddenly buzzed loudly inside Clara’s pocket. Clara pulled it out, seeing an incoming text message from her sister at Mercy General Hospital.

“Dad’s heart rate is stabilizing, but he’s asking for you by name. He keeps mumbling about a safety deposit box at the downtown Federal Reserve. Clara, where are you?”

Clara stared at the text message, then looked back at the computer monitor where Julian was now walking away from the struggling attorney into the dark shadows of the warehouse.

Before Clara could type a reply to her sister, the office door slowly creaked open, revealing a tall figure standing in the dimly lit hallway holding a heavy iron wrench.
