Chapter 9 - The House of Cards

Vanessa rushed across the Persian rug, stopping short as she realized the room was occupied not just by Marcus and his estranged family, but by federal law enforcement. She turned wide, accusing eyes toward Marcus, her carefully constructed composure completely shattering under the weight of impending ruin.
"You told me it was airtight!" Vanessa hissed, her voice rising in panic as she grabbed Marcus by the lapels of his unbuttoned shirt. "You promised me that Elena and the boy were completely powerless! Now the federal marshals are downstairs impounding my car!"
Marcus roughly shoved her hands away, his face flushing a dark, angry crimson. "Shut your mouth, Vanessa! You knew the risks when you signed on to help me siphon those funds into your shell companies. You were more than happy to spend the money when it was rolling in!"
"I spent it because you said the Vance empire was untouchable!" Vanessa shrieked, tears of frustration springing to her eyes. She turned toward Elena, her expression twisting into desperate pleading. "Elena, you have to listen to me! Marcus tricked me too! He told me you and he were already legally separated, that the divorce papers were just waiting for a signature! I was just a pawn in his game!"
Elena crossed her arms, looking down at the frantic woman with absolute detachment. "You wore my mother-in-law’s brooch to a public gala while parading my husband in front of the entire city, Vanessa. You weren't a pawn. You were a willing accomplice. And now you get to share the consequences."
Julian stood up from the sofa, walking slowly toward the glass coffee table where Marcus’s expensive Italian leather planner lay open. With his bandaged hand, he flipped the planner closed and picked up a small, elegant silver fountain pen resting beside it.
"You both forgot the golden rule of corporate warfare," Julian said softly, twirling the silver pen between his fingers before setting it down on the edge of the table. "Never underestimate someone who has nothing left to lose."
Marcus glared at his son, his fists clenched so tightly at his sides that his knuckles turned white. "You think you've won, Julian? The game isn't over yet. I still have friends in places you can't even imagine. People who make federal warrants look like pieces of paper."
Before Julian could reply, the elevator chime at the end of the private foyer chimed loudly. The doors slid open to reveal three more individuals stepping into the penthouse: two senior partners from Vance Global’s board of directors, flanked by the firm’s chief legal counsel, Arthur Pendelton.
Arthur Pendelton looked older and more tired than usual, his gray suit slightly wrinkled, carrying a thick leather briefcase under his arm. He bypassed Marcus entirely, walking straight past Vanessa and stopping directly in front of ten-year-old Julian. To the utter shock of everyone in the room, the veteran corporate lawyer slowly, respectfully dipped his head toward the boy.
"Good evening, young master Vance," Arthur said formally, his voice carrying clearly across the silent penthouse. "The emergency board meeting you requested via proxy has concluded."
Marcus’s jaw dropped. "Arthur? Have you lost your mind? What emergency board meeting? I am the CEO! You don't have the authority to call a board meeting without my authorization!"
Arthur turned his head slowly, looking at Marcus with a gaze filled with profound disappointment. "Not anymore, Marcus. Under section four of the Vance family corporate charter, if the sitting CEO is indicted on federal felony charges of embezzlement and fraud, the executive committee automatically passes temporary operational control to the primary bloodline heir."

Arthur turned back to Julian, extending a crisp, folded document sealed with a red wax stamp. "The board has voted unanimously, Julian. You are now the interim chairman of Vance Global until you reach legal majority. And your first official executive act has just been executed."
